NationMaster - Encyclopedia: County of Burgundy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The County of Burgundy was a medieval county, within the traditional province and modern French region Franche-Comté, whose very name is reminiscent of the unusual title of its count : Freigraf ('free count', or franc comte in french, hence the term franc(he) comté for his feudal principiality).
The kingdom itself collapsed among feudal anarchy in the 11th century, and the Duchy of Burgundy was founded by a cadet branch of the Capetian dynasty.
The two kingdoms of Burgundy were reunited in 937 and absorbed into the Holy Roman Empire under Conrad II in 1032, while the duchy of Burgundy was annexed by the French throne in 1004.
