Beats, Rhymes and Life - A Tribe Called Quest - Song Listings
With their fourth album Beats, Rhymes and Life, A Tribe Called Quest manages to be one of the few hip-hop acts to successfully age by pushing both their music and their lyrics into new directions.
Stylistically, the record is closest to its immediate predecessor, Midnight Marauders, in the sense that the group's jazz-rap fusion are downplayed and the beat stays surprisingly hard throughout the album.
What distinguishes Beats, Rhymes and Life from Marauders is a deeper sense not only of eclectism, but of spirituality and maturity.

I learned long ago that a man's life should be measured not by what happened to him along the path of his life, but by the decisions he made.
My life is going great, thanks in no small part to the people who have surrounded me. Albita has been wonderful to us, helping out with things, giving Natalie and I a place to enjoy our summer together, and just supporting us the way she has.
My life is the canvas they painted, and whether or not anyone else considers it a masterpiece, it is a piece I am happy and proud of.

My life is fuller now, a veritable tree sagging heavily with ripe fruit limned with the fluorescense of maturity, and yet I am in my gazebo at 5:18 in the morning, lonelier than a vagrant sleeping away the night in an shadowed doorstep.

The ‘Hip Hop Beats, Rhymes and Life’ course came about partly through the work of the blended learning team at the Sheffield College, along with close collaborative work with a performance group of students from the United States.
The course was designed in a similar way to a traditional outreach program, and aimed to attract learners who may have traditionally rejected formal education by giving them the opportunity to create their own music and explore a culture important to them: ‘Hip Hop’.
The majority of the work takes place on computers, as learners construct their own beats and rhymes while going through the process of producing and recording their sounds.

Beats, Rhymes and Life is laced with a thread of allegory that runs through one song and is picked up in the next.

A repeating theme of the album is the emergence of so many phony rappers who have stepped into the rap scene yelling "keep it real" and constantly rapping about how many guns they carry and how much weed they smoke.
