The album is either hailed as a masterpiece in one corner while in another corner, there's a barrage of booing and hissing.
When the album was released in 1978, opinions were obivously divided however, "Beaubourg" has become somewhat of a cult classic over the years.
Sure, the album may have a lot of random surrealness to it, but if you are switching from vynyl/tape to CD, it can be a bit jarring when you hear the errors.

The album is meant to reflect life in the Beaubourg district of Paris, when Vangelis lived there in the early '70s.
Beaubourg is a musical representation of the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
The music on this album was created largely on the Yamaha CS-80, the ring modulator of which he uses extensively.

The single is quickly followed by their first album "End of the world", and only one year later the band releases another album, titled "It's five o'clock".
It is the first album to be released for his new record label RCA, and in later followed by "Albedo 0.39" in 1976, "Spiral" in 1977 and "Beaubourg" in 1978.
The first album to be released for Polydor is "China", a typical album where Vangelis not only shows his ability to play electronic instruments, but also masterfully plays all kinds of percussion instruments.

Two albums' worth of material had resulted from these sessions, but were never intended for release.
Musically, the album can be considered to be Vangelis' most idiosyncratic and unusual release, as it takes the form of an extended experiment in experimental Jazz, or Jazz Fusion.
The cover artwork for Hypothesis is by Angus McKie, and is merely a "borrowed" illustration he drew for a series of novels by SF author Brian Stableford, featuring the spacecraft Hooded Swan, mentioned in the books.

The three long tracks on the album are all stuffed with the typical Hammill-sounding melodies and themes relieved by an progressive, complex and disharmonic energy of a kind that will leave you breathless.
The album is a very powerful and grandiose mix of rock, jazz, symphonic and classical music with tons of choirs and wonderful, analogue and very symphonic keyboard sounds.
The title of the album is taken from a museum for modern and abstract art in Paris, and that's probably not a coincidence as this is a really abstract and experimental piece of music.

Despite the succes he had with recent albums, he suddenly turned away from his characeristic sound in the mid eighties, and began to explore new styles of music.
However the music from the released soundtrack album and the actual score of the film differs alot, and there are many passages and melodies in the film not represented on the album.

The first RCA compilation album, originally released on LP in 1978, later reissued on CD compiles a few tracks the "Heaven and Hell", "Albedo 0.39", "Spiral" and Beaubourg albums, Vangelis' entire repertoire on that particular label at the time.
Actually, the Vangelis LP isn't really a compilation as most of the albums from this series were, but it's the Earth LP repackaged with an extensive booklet, texts in Italian and a number of never before seen pictures from the 70s and 80s.

In terms of music the album is a bit of a rarity – it is very sound-oriented with no real melody or rhythm to it but nevertheless tonal.
Beaubourg is the Paris district where Vangelis lived at one time and in it stands the bizarre Centre Pompidou with the famous tube-network construction.
‘Beaubourg’ is not an album you’d much listen to but it’s not to be ignored either.

The structure of the album would prove to be very representative for several of records to come from the band, with one side-long title-track and a couple of "shorter" tracks on the other side.
The first album from this line-up would also show itself to be one of the most ambitious and controversial ones of the band's entire career.
The album came in a blue coloured vinyl to symbolize the deep blue waters of the Bermuda triangle, and both sides of the record featured a secret message that only could be decoded by using a now completely outdated system called TARBEL.

Empyrean is his latest album, consisting of seven contemplations on the cosmos that in the words of John are "partially concrete, partially abstract".
As you might imagine from that description, this is not your typical ambient or spacemusic album.
The overall feel is similar to Ron Berry's music where the focus is on a few important sounds and ways of delivering them, resulting in the music being more "to the point" and not highly textured or layered.

The CD liner notes for Odes have the lyrics in French, although the album is sung in Greek by Irene.
Vangelis produced 2 brilliant albums, "See You Later" & "Soil Festivities", both eccentric as hell, a couple of _weird_ ones ("Invisible Connections" and "Beaubourg"), a few reasonable ones ("Albedo 0.39, Spiral, Earth...) and a lot of overbearing dross (anything with the words "Jon Anderson" on the back :-)).

Beaubourg refers to Centre Beaubourg (or the George Pompidou National Museum of Modern Art) located in Paris.
Beaubourg is the center of the most expressive among us artists where reality is deconstructed and anarchy reigns (basically, a heaven or a sanctuary for all the Dada artists out there).
The last two minutes are the most recognizable, even to those who will never listen to that album even if their life depended on it, because it was also used in Cosmos (and is even on the The Music of the Cosmos album).

Pierre Henry even collaborated with the rock group Spooky Tooth on their album Ceremony.
