Monsieur Beaucaire (1924)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Sadly, however, today Monsieur Beaucaire is largely remembered as an ill conceived project that helped to ruin Valentino's marriage (he and his wife saw themselves as artistic collaborators, but unfairly or not almost everyone else on the set saw her as a meddling nuisance) and nearly wrecked his career.
Valentino or the scriptwriter also has enough of a sense of humour to apparently spoof his off screen image as a great lover; as a droll title card points out, one of the advantages of being a common barber is that no one expects you to make love to her.
Monsieur Beaucaire in fact allows Valentino many opportunities to display his flair for comedy, particularly in the middle part of the film when he can't wait for his first duel.

 Monsieur Beaucaire review
Marking the return of Rudolph Valentino to the screen - and probably the biggest drawing card among all the productions of the early fall season - "Monsieur Beaucaire" is an adaptation, and a highly workmanlike one, of Booth Tarkington's romantic vignette.
Curiously, as developed into celluloid, it reaches its strongest vein of interest in the freshly created sequence in the court ruled by Louis XV and Madame Pompadour.
And as the Duc de Chartres, who flees to England to escape the rage of his cousin, King Louis XV, for refusing to marry Henriette - and again as the French barber, Beaucaire, Valentino acts with a fine romantic air.

Monsieur Beaucaire, Booth Tarkington's novel about an 18th-century French barber who poses as a swashbuckling aristocrat, was the surprising source for this Grade-A Bob Hope comedy.
While in the original novel the tonsorial hero pretended to be someone he wasn't by choice, in this 1946 film Hope is coerced into posturing as a nobleman on the threat of death.
The female contingent is represented by Joan Caulfield as Bob's covetous girl friend, Marjorie Reynolds as a princess, and Hillary Brooke as a haughty schemer (who is given her just desserts in an early slapstick set-piece).

Napoleon Series Reviews: Le Souper de Beaucaire1793
Le Souper de Beaucaire or the Supper at Beaucaire, Napoleon’s 1793 political pamphlet was well worth reading because it was so well written and skillfully constructed.
Completed in July 29, 1793, while he was captain in the French Army, Napoleon wrote it as a plea to end a bloody civil war that was raging in the south of France during the summer of the same year.
Perhaps the most memorable passage in the whole pamphlet is the argument between the soldier and the Marseilles merchant.

 Monsieur Beaucaire (1946)
Beaucaire (Hope) is barber to Louis XV of France — until the former’s romantic altercations with a chambermaid named Mimi (Joan Caulfield) inadvertently result in banishment for both Mimi and himself.
At the same time, the king finds it expedient to rid the court of the Duc le Chandre, a renowned swordsman and celebrated ladies’ man, by making a political marriage between le Chandre and Princess Maria of Spain (Marjorie Reynolds).
As with the romantic comedies of Shakespeare, the plot involves parallel "upper-class" and "lower-class" storylines — the difference being that here the upper-class romance is in the background and the lower-class one in the foreground.
