The shores of the islands also are generally protected by fringing coral reefs, the largest of which is that extending off the west and south side of Piron Island to a distance of seven or eight miles, with a well defined border towards Coral Haven.
One of the small islands, and also a hilltop on the northern shore, had an artificial appearance, their summits being leveled and the sides scarped--they were the remains of former fortified villages or pahs.

 Recovery Plan for Albatrosses and Giant-Petrels - Breeding
The present status of the Macquarie Island population is difficult to assess because its history is poorly known.
The small population size of Black-browed Albatrosses at Macquarie Island combined with the apparent extremely low rates of recruitment is cause for grave and urgent concern for the viability of its future.
Adults were observed foraging 30km from their colony at Hawker Island in the Australian Antarctic Territory (Green 1986), 190km from South Georgia (Isla Georgia del Sur) (Croxall and Prince 1987), and 470km from Palmer Island (Obst 1985).

The Beauchene Island is the most far offshore island in the Falkland-Group, located about 46 miles south-south-west of the southeast end of Falkland on a position of 52S55 and 59W12.
The island consists of two parts, the southern part with a hill of an elevation of 82 meters, and a northeastern part with bare, steep-to rocks.
During the Falkland Island War, in 1982, an Argentinian military ship, run on the Mintary Rock, a submerget reef, about 2 miles further south, and in April 1982 a group of Great Britain soldiers climbed the island, and lived for about 4 weeks on the island.

This is unlikely, as Beauchene Island does not possess the high mountains or bays referred to in Roche's account.

Two offshore transects P1 (to the east of Stanley) and P5 (to the south of Beauchene) revealed that the Falkland Current was weakened and at its offshore position, thereby reducing upwelling of deepwater especially near Beauchene.

Richard Thomas: Indeed this is one of the major fl-browed albatross colonies in the world, and the Falklands Island group themselves are one of the most important nesting sites for the species.
Monitoring work, counting the numbers of breeding pairs of fl-browed albatrosses over the last few years has shown a substantial decline in the number of birds that are breeding.
For example, in the last five years, the numbers breeding here at Beauchene have declined by something like 35,000 pairs, and over the Falkland Islands as a whole, around 88,000 pairs have gone.

Albatrosses and their smaller cousins, the petrels, are being killed in huge numbers by commercial fishing boats that trail long lines carrying thousands of baited hooks.
During the latest nesting season, the fl-browed albatross (Diomedea melanophris) population on Beauchene Island, one of the Falklands group, was down to 101,000 pairs, from 160,000 pairs in the early Eighties.
Studies on Bird Island in South Georgia, found that 1,500 out of a population of 22,000 fl-browed, 500 out of 20,000 grey-headed (D chrysostema) and 45 out of 4,000 wandering albatrosses (D exulans) fail to return each year, and that the longliner operations are the chief suspect.

The direction has been a problem though and we spent much of the first night tacking longwindedly from East to West and making only slow progress to the south before we were finally clear of Beauchene Island at the southernmost extremity of the Falkland Islands.
Further south we have been blessed with more favourable wind from the west and at a kindly Force 4-5; although as we gain ground to the south the growing swell from the west is an ever present reminder of the exposed nature of the waters down here.
I suspect that, unless the weather changes dramatically, it will be the latter factors that prevail and we shall leave our Elephant Island tasks until later in the Expedition’s programme and complete them as part of the return journey north in late January.
