Beaucoup Fish - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Beaucoup Fish is a 1999 (see 1999 in music) album by Underworld.
Beaucoup Fish was well-received critically (some reviews calling it "electronica's Dark Side of the Moon") and remains Underworld's best-selling album.
The album's original working title was "Tonight Matthew, I'm Going to be Underworld" inspired by British TV programme 'Stars In Their Eyes' [[1]] however it was later changed on the basis that this tongue in cheek title would be incompehensible to non British buyers.

This is the second release of the new single from Beaucoup Fish.
Third album Beaucoup Fish saw them continue to consolidate their position as the world's premiere four-to-the-floor techno band.
Beaucoup Fish is a steady step above second LP Second Toughest in the Infants, and while it never scales the more spectacular heights of Underworld's aforementioned debut, this album sounds like a grower, and will likely appear in a lot of Top Ten lists come December.

The album is not a huge stylistic makeover, though, as the focus is still trance, albeit with less heavy beats than on Beaucoup Fish, their previous album.
This allows further musical exploration than on Beaucoup Fish, as there's less concentrated on aggressive beats for dancing.
This albums is less aggressive than their previous album, Beaucoup Fish, often more open to ambient music and lounge music aesthetics than solely trance music.

The much-anticipated Beaucoup Fish, therefore, is bound to be either a masterful return to the scene or a bit of an anticlimax.
After all, with its subtle hints of drum-and-bass, accessible arrangements, and marketable catch phrases—in the realm of pop music, singing still equals songs, and no matter how stream-of-consciousness Karl Hyde's vocals may be, in the ears of programmers they're still better than nothing—Underworld was set to explode.
So Beaucoup Fish is in some sense a fresh start: No longer propelled by a certain cultural inertia, Underworld must convince its fans and sort-of-fans that its new album was worth the wait.

In places, Beaucoup Fish is haunting and ambient, with a bit of darkness and paranoia underlying cascades of metallic percussion.
No single song on Beaucoup Fish has that track's adrenaline kick or addictive hook, yet the album as a whole is better than Second Toughest in the Infants, the 1996 Underworld album to which "Born Slippy" was added after the film made it a hit.
On Beaucoup Fish, Hyde's deadpan vocals are closer to the forefront of several songs than they were on the last album, though often the lyrics are so surreal or unintelligible that the singing works more as another instrument than it does as narrative.

There may not be a ready-made 18-30 holiday "lager, lager" chant lurking within the 11 tracks, but it flows like the finest champagne for one hour, 14 minutes and two glorious seconds.
The tempo is changed at will, beats disappear as quickly as they arrive and the lull is just as likely to occur during the storm as before it.
Beaucoup Fish is as simple as it is complicated and arguably superior to Second Toughest In The Infants, not least because it is instantly infectious and more akin to the untoppable Dubnobasswithmyheadman.

Beaucoup Fish is not the ultimate Underworld album that fans may dream of.
On Beaucoup Fish, however, that sound slips around tracks that do more than patiently await the next thick coat of rhythm, building simple songs into a digitized, epic whole.
Underworld are doomed to be haunted forever by "Born Slippy" (popularized via the Trainspotting soundtrack), the world's first international rave anthem, yet Beaucoup Fish goes well beyond such timely phenomena, and works instead to free electronic music from its computer-age constraints.

According to recent interviews, Underworld vocalist Karl Hyde has sobered up since the days when the band’s single, "Born Slippy," was clocking time as the junkie opus on the Trainspotting soundtrack.
There’s no detecting the change on Beaucoup Fish, however — Hyde’s jumbled up, stream-of-consciousness monologues still constitute the most recognizable element of the Underworld sound, and the music provided by bandmates Darren Emerson and Rick Smith still evokes a blurry, post-clubbing world.
And that’s the most interesting thing about Underworld: Although you could happily lose yourself dancing to the pounding beat of songs such as "Shudder" and "King of Snakes" and the recent club anthem "Moaner," the bulk of the group’s work seems ill-suited for the interior of a club.

Underworld emerged in the late ’80s as a new-wavish guitar band that gradually incorporated electronics until reaching their present-day techno-god stature (probably due to the inclusion of their very cool "Born Slippy" on the "Trainspotting" soundtrack).
After listening to "Beaucoup Fish," the answer’s clear: apparently not a whole lot.
Obviously the band has become very deft at trend spotting; they eagerly try to clone daft punk (and French techno in general), bad ’80s pop and boring house music.

Everyone seems to, even if they don't know who Underworld is. Most people have come across them in the form of their song, "Born Slippy," on the Trainspotting soundtrack.
Unfortunately, their new album Beaucoup Fish doesn't really have anything as memorable as "Born Slippy," though it is more consistently good Underworld.
The first track, "Cups," is a pretty good metaphor for the whole album.

While there are no radical departures here, much of Beaucoup Fish operates at +8.
This is probably less a product of "Born Slippy's" 140 BPM success than Darren Emerson's immersion in the English superclub scene, which is becoming increasingly dominated by the hard and fast sounds of Goa trance.
