Beauford Halbert Jester (1893-1949), governor, was born in Corsicana, Texas, on January 12, 1893, to Frances (Gordon) and George Taylor Jester.
Jester also managed the land, cattle, and cotton holdings of the family ranch and was president of the Navarro County Bar Association from 1925 to 1938 and director of the state bar in 1940-41.
Jester was a member of the University of Texas Board of Regents from 1929 to 1935 and from 1933 to 1935 was the youngest person ever to chair the board.

George Taylor Jester (1847-1922), businessman, banker, and lieutenant governor of Texas, was born in Macoupin County, Illinois, on August 23, 1847, to Levi and Diadema Jester.
Jester was also one of five citizens to subscribe $5,000 to the campaign to build the Corsicana YMCA and one of the founders of Southern Methodist University.
Jester died in 1875, and in 1880 Jester married Frances P. Gordon of Aberdeen, Mississippi.

In 1946 he ran for and was elected state lieutenant governor; he was reelected two years later.
Subsequently, the Senate passed a right-to-work law, reorganized the public school system with the Gilmer-Aikin Laws, appropriated funds for higher education, including the Texas State University for Negroes (now Texas Southern University), and provided monies for improvements of state hospitals and highways.
On July 11, 1949, Beauford Jester died; subsequently Shivers assumed the governorship, which he held effectively for the next seven years.
