This "Gullah" culture, as it came to be called, survives to this day on the sea islands, long after slavery's demise, and suggests the depth and durability of this underside of the slave regime as well as the tenacity with which those living in a state of utter domination held to their history and customs.
Beaufort and the sea islands remained a kind of stagnant backwater, looked down upon by the upcountry farmers now in charge of state government and lacking capital sufficient to lift aspirations beyond the status quo.
There remains a possibility that Beaufort might be "loved to death." But it is equally possible that "the land called Chicora" will become a case study of how old and new might be kept in balance and harmony.

Beaufort has a long and distinguished library history, begun when the State of South Carolina granted a charter in 1807 to the Beaufort Library Society.
These were housed at the old College of Beaufort Building (now part of the University of South Carolina at Beaufort).
In 1931 the Berean Presbyterian Church building on Carteret Street was purchased with funds from a trust held by the Library Board "for library purposes for the colored citizens of Beaufort Township." It was renovated and opened in 1932 as the J.L. Washington Branch of the Beaufort Township Library and operated as such until 1965.
