The Beaufort Sea is a large body of water north of The Northwest Territories, the Yukon, and Alaska and west of Canada's arctic islands that is a part of the Arctic Ocean.
The Beaufort Sea is also the location of what are believed to be significant petroleum reserves beneath the seabed, a continuation of proven reserves in the nearby Mackenzie River and North Slope.
The Beaufort Sea was first explored in the 1960s and the Amauligak Project of 1986 began operating the first functioning oil platform.

In the fall and spring, western arctic populations of common eiders and long-tailed ducks migrate along the coast of the Beaufort Sea to and from breeding areas in Canada and Alaska (Johnston and Herter 1989).
Identification of spring staging areas, key foraging areas and habitats used in summer, and fall staging areas throughout the Beaufort Sea is poorly described for common eiders and long-tailed ducks.

EO Newsroom: New Images - Ice Types in the Beaufort Sea, Alaska
Determining the amount and type of sea ice in the polar oceans is crucial to improving our knowledge and understanding of polar weather and long term climate fluctuations.
Sea ice in the Beaufort Sea off the north coast of Alaska was classified and mapped in these concurrent images acquired March 19, 2001 and mapped to the same geographic area.
In general, sea ice types that exhibit increased radar backscatter appear bright in SAR and are identified as rougher, older ice types.

 Circulation in the Beaufort Sea
We are presently investigating the circulation over the continental slope and adjacent abyssal plain of the Beaufort Sea using moored time series of temperature, salinity, and current velocity.
The boundary current along the Beaufort slope shows frequent reversals, at least in part associated with long wave propagation, but the mean flow is clearly cyclonic, even though the flow of ice and near-surface water is westward.
Seaward of the Beaufort Sea slope and below the mixed layer, the most energetic part of the velocity field resides in eddies with a typical horizontal length scale of 10-20 km.

This case study shows the primary results of a project in which satellite images were used to map the dynamics of the Canadian Beaufort Sea coastline from 1973 to 1999.
According to literature this coastline is highly sensitive to erosion and hence to sea level rises resulting from climate warming.
Yet, the dominant coastline dynamics of the Canadian Beaufort Sea could be mapped successfully.

Methane in coastal sea water, sea ice, and bottom sediments, Beaufort Sea, Alaska
The objective of this project has been to test the hypothesis that gas hydrate deposits of the Beaufort Sea continental shelf are destabilized by the ~10°C temperature increase that has resulted from the Holocene transgression of the Arctic Ocean.
Thus the Beaufort Sea shelf of Alaska is a seasonal source of methane.
The methane content of sea ice was measured at 51 stations in 1993 and 1994.

The objective was to reconstruct the evolution of sea surface conditions in the area during the Holocene.
Dinoflagellate cysts were used as proxy indicators of sea surface conditions (temperature, salinity, sea ice cover), foraminifera were used as indicators of water mass conditions, and thecamoebians were used as indicators of freshwater inputs from the Mackenzie River.

Canada’s Beaufort Sea offers a magnificent vista of marine habitat largely untarnished by modern industrial development, but North America’s demand for increased domestic fossil fuel supply is creating pressure to drill for oil and gas (see The Nature Audit, Part III, pp.

The Mackenzie Delta-Beaufort Sea frontier region is potentially a major new source of supply for the ever-increasing North American natural gas market.
Other reasons motivating the interest in Mackenzie Delta-Beaufort Sea gas include the potential for huge finds, new pipeline infrastructure pushing northward, technological innovations reducing costs, a clearer land claim situation, and renewed interest by governments and aboriginal peoples for economic development in the region.

Utilizing an ice severity index based on the distance from Point Barrow, Alaska, to the ice edge and characteristics of the shipping season, variations in summer ice conditions are examined from 1953 through 2000 with respect to variations in winter and summer surface and meteorological conditions.
During light ice summers the Beaufort High is strongly defined over the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, enhancing easterly and northerly winds and advecting sea ice out of the Beaufort Sea.
Variations in sea level pressure and winds that result in light and heavy ice summers are closely linked to positive and negative winter Arctic Oscillation/North Atlantic Oscillation phases, as well as negative and positive summer Arctic Oscillation/North Atlantic Oscillation phases.
