The original Beauharnois Canal measured 15 nm (24 km in length and was built on the south side of the St. Lawrence River, opening in 1843.
The canal became obsolete and was superseded by the Soulanges Canal in 1899 which ran on the north side of the St. Lawrence River.
The present Beauharnois Canal was built between 1930-1932 on the south side of the St. Lawrence River, measuring 25.7 km in length.

West of the Island of Montreal and Lac Saint-Louis, the Beauharnois Canal bypasses the Beauharnois hydroelectric dam.
At the towns of Cornwall and Massena, the river and seaway form an international waterway with Ontario on the northern shore and New York State on the southern shore.
This short canal is operated toll-free by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers[1] and not by the U.S.-Canada jointly controlled St Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation, thus they are often not considered part of the St Lawrence Seaway although in practice they are an integral part of the Great Lakes navigation system.

From Kingston, at the head of the river, to Montreal, a distance of 170 m., navigation is limited to vessels of 14 ft. draught by the capacity of the canals.
The canals on the St Lawrence above Montreal have been enlarged to the capacity of the Welland canal, the improved system having been opened to commerce in the autumn of 1899.
Instead of enlarging the Beauharnois canal, on the south side of the river, a new canal, the Soulanges, was built from Coteau Landing to Cascades Point, on the 1~orth side, the Beauharnois canal still being used for small barges.

The Cornwall canal, overcoming one of the river's worst rapids, the Long Sault, was built on the site of the present canal which is, in fact, simply an enlargement of the first.
The completion of the chain of canals around all the important rapids signalled the beginning of a period of furious activity along the river and large numbers of ships were built to ply between the lake ports and Montreal.
When canalling, these vessels were towed by teams of horses which, in many cases, were carried in the forecastle, others being hired as required from neighboring farmers.

Between 1913 and 1932, the WELLAND CANAL, between Lakes ERIE and ONTARIO, was rebuilt, but the US was reluctant to enter a larger scheme, that is, to rebuild the Montréal-Lake Ontario channels.
The Soulanges section, comprising the 25.7 km Beauharnois Canal, includes the 2 Beauharnois locks, which provide a total lift of 25 m to overcome the Beauharnois hydroelectric power dam.

After the first canals were built (Coteau du Lac, Lachine, etc.), the need to improve the existing ones and to extend the system became clear, notably as the tension between Britain and the United States mounted and as Upper Canada was being settled.
Work for the Ottawa-Rideau Canal began in 1826 and the canal was completed in 1832 The detour imposed by the canal is far longer than by the more direct route, 394 km against 294 by the St. Lawrence.
Therefore, this canal was built for strategic reasons and as soon as Canada / United States relations became more cordial (in the middle of the nineteen century), the Rideau Canal lost a significant share of its "raison d'etre".

A series of projects followed thereafter: construction of the Beauharnois hydroelectric generating station, inauguration of the existing Beauharnois Canal in 1932 and the St. Lawrence Seaway in 1959.
Operation of the Beauharnois hydroelectric generating station transformed Lake Saint-François into a reservoir whose level was raised by 40 cm and maintained so that variations never exceed 15 cm; prior to 1932, they could reach as high as 50 cm.

In S eptember, 1730, Fort Beauharnois was rebuilt on a plot of higher ground near the old establishment.
In 1743, and again in 1746, representative chiefs of the Dakota nation made a journey to Quebec and presented to the Government of New France a petition for the re-establishment of the fort and for the restoration of trade relations.
Fort Beauharnois was retained until the outbreak of the war between the English and the French, but it was never occupied after the surrender which followed the defeat of Montcalm in the famous battle of Quebec (1759).
