 The Newfoundland Beaumont Hamel Memorial
In the Beaumont Hamel Memorial Park, which was officially opened by Earl Haig on June 7, 1925, the monument of the great bronze caribou, emblem of the Regiment, stands on the highest point overlooking the site of the St. John's Road and the slopes beyond.
It was at Beaumont Hamel, on July 1, 1916, the opening day of the Battle of the Somme, that the Newfoundland Regiment fought its first engagement in France - and its costliest of the whole war.
The largest of the battlefield parks established in memory of Newfoundlanders who died in the First World War is in France at beaumont Hamel, nine kilometres directly north of the town of Albert.

Beaumont village was captured by British troops in November, 1916, but Hamel was in British occupation from the summer of 1915, until the 27th March, 1918.
Hamel Military Cemetery was begun by fighting units and Field Ambulances in August, 1915, and carried on until June, 1917; and a few further burials were made in Plot II, Row F, after the capture of the village in 1918.

On 3 September a further attack was delivered between Hamel and Beaumont-Hamel and on 13 and 14 November, the 51st (Highland), 63rd (Royal Naval), 39th and 19th (Western) Divisions finally succeeded in capturing Beaumont-Hamel, Beaucourt-sur-Ancre and St. Pierre-Divion.
Following the German withdrawal to the Hindenburg Line in the spring of 1917, V Corps cleared this battlefield and created a number of cemeteries, of which Ancre British Cemetery (then called Ancre River No 1 British Cemetery, V Corps Cemetery No. 26) was one.

Beaumont Hamel from the Sunken Lane (or Hunter's Trench as it became from 1st July 1916).
The end of the path (running to Beaumont Hamel Military Cemetery) marks the approximate area where so many men were killed and maimed when they struggled down the remblai into the wire, all the while in the direct view of the German machine gunners.
The target, Beaumont village, the church spire of which can be seen between the trees, was protected by the Bern Werk strong point which was located in the trees, left-foreground.

Beaumont Hamel and Auchonvillers are really just small settlements built up around country road-junctions But some villages are even smaller that that - just a few houses and farmhouses stretching for a short distance on either side of the road.
