Advertising - Facts, Information, and Encyclopedia Reference article
Advertising frequently uses persuasive appeals, both logical and emotional (that is, it is a form of propaganda), sometimes even to the exclusion of any product information.
Public service advertising, non-commercial advertising, public interest advertising, cause marketing, and social marketing are different terms for (or aspects of) the use of sophisticated advertising and marketing communications techniques (generally associated with commercial enterprise) on behalf of non-commercial, public interest issues and initiatives.
Public interest groups, and free thinkers are increasingly suggesting that access to the mental space targeted by advertisers should be taxed, in that at the present moment that space is being freely taken advantage of by advertisers with no compensation paid to the members of the public who are thus being intruded upon.

Cosmetic advertising is the promotion of cosmetics and beauty products by the cosmetics industry through a variety of media.

 Beauty...and the Beast of Advertising
Advertising is the foundation and economic lifeblood of the mass media.
Advertising creates a mythical, mostly white world in which people are rarely ugly, overweight, poor, struggling or disabled, either physically or mentally (unless you count the housewives who talk to little men in toilet bowls).
Advertising images do not cause these problems, but they contribute to them by creating a climate in which the marketing of women's bodies--the sexual sell and dismemberment, distorted body image ideals and the use of children as sex objects--is seen as acceptable.

Webloggirls.com - Race and beauty: a comparison of Asian and Western models in women's magazine advertisements
Current advertising theories hold that to be resonant with a target audience, message designers must match the models, the clothing, the accessories, as well as headlines and body copy with the values and needs of the target audience (Belch and Belch, 2003).
Given the increased interest in Asia and the current global expansion of the beauty industries across borders, it is surprising that there has not been more research on how women are depicted in fashion and beauty advertising across different regions.
The purpose of this research was to analyze advertisements collected from women's fashion and beauty magazines in Singapore, Taiwan, and the United States to see if there are differences in the ways in which Western and Asian models are used in advertising.

For a woman, the messages all share a common theme: She must be "beautiful." Advertising, of course, did not invent the notion that women should be valued as ornaments; women have always been measured against cultural ideals of beauty.
