"Beauty and the Beast" by Jeanne-Marie LePrince de Beaumont, 1783
Beauty then feared she had been the cause of his death; she ran crying and wringing her hands all about the palace, like one in despair; after having sought for him everywhere, she recollected her dream, and flew to the canal in the garden, where she dreamed she saw him.
Beast was disappeared, and she saw, at her feet, one of the loveliest princes that eye ever beheld; who returned her thanks for having put an end to the charm, under which he had so long resembled a Beast.
Beauty, agreeably surprised, gave the charming prince her hand to rise; they went together into the castle, and Beauty was overjoyed to find, in the great hall, her father and his whole family, whom the beautiful lady, that appeared to her in her dream, had conveyed thither.

Beauty and the Beast (1946) - Talk - Spout
The Beast falls in love with her and proposes marriage on a nightly basis; she refuses, having pledged her troth to a handsome prince (also played by Marais).
Eventually, however, she is drawn to the repellent but strangely fascinating Beast, who tests her fidelity by giving her a key, telling her that if she doesn't return it to him by a specific time, he will die of grief.
The Beast's makeup, in particular, works beautifully; it's just realistic enough to be convincing, while allowing Marais to emote through his eyes and subtle facial tics.

 BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
Because ideas of beauty and ugliness are so personal they affect us at primitive and instinctual levels, and are the most difficult of dualities to comprehend and transcend.
Within each of us is the archetypical Beauty: the one who is good and pleases others, the one who is giving and altruistic, the one who believes and has faith, the one who shares and is unafraid of what tomorrow will bring.
The Beast is everything we wish to put away from us, but which despite our best efforts surfaces now and then in fits of temper, insecurity, and despair.
