Beauvoir faces the Gulf of Mexico, and Davis enjoyed spending time on the beach (at right) during his later years, as did his grandchildren, who visited often before the Hayes family moved to Colorado.
Twelve barracks, a hospital, and a chapel were constructed on the Beauvoir land, home to as many as 250 veterans and their family members at peak operation.

Beauvoir was located between the villages of Biloxi, 5 miles to the east, and Handsboro, 4.5 miles to the northwest, and was accessible from either by Pass Road, which ran north of Beauvoir.

Despite hurricane damage and lucrative offers to purchase the estate, Beauvoir remained in the hands of the Davis family until 1902, when the central portion of the estate was sold for $10,000 to the Mississippi Division, United Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Museum operations at Beauvoir began in 1941 with the opening of the main residence and Confederate cemetery for tours and have subseqently expanded to include a Confederate Museum, Davis Family Gallery, Theatre, Tomb of the Unknown Confederate Soldier, Stars and Bars Gift Shop, and other features of interest on 52 landscaped acres.
