The Society was housed in the old University Building in downtown Seattle where the Fairmont Olympic Hotel now stands.
Certificates for membership in the Western Academy of Beaux Arts sold for $200 and made their holder eligible for a $250 reduction in the price of a lot; however, sales of homesites were not brisk.
In the early 40's, the Beaux Arts Water District purchased the land from the county and sold it for homesites.

 The City Beautiful Movement
An excellent example of these conditions are the alleys and tenements of Washington D.C. The type of squalor found in these "homes" was understandably unacceptable in the nation's capital--these alleys were hidden away.
The conditions found in the city center of Washington D.C. was not unique; the squalor and hopelessness of city life for immigrants and the poor throughout the country has been recounted numerous times by writers such as Theodore Dreiser, Stephen Crane, Riis, and Frank Norris.
They had to make the assumption that the poverty-stricken were somehow morally, and by extension civically deficient, a point of view quite in vogue at the time, with the continuing popularity of Darwin's theories of survival of the fittest and Spenser's translation of these ideas into the social realm.
