The islands are referred to in the English language as "(The) Falkland Islands".
The largest company in the islands is the Falkland Islands Company, a publicly quoted company on the London Stock Exchange and responsible for the majority of the economic activity on the islands, though its farms were sold in 1991 to the Falkland Islands Government.
The extra-provincial Anglican parish of the Falkland Islands is under the direct jurisdiction of the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Argentina has continued to claim sovereignty over the islands, and the dispute was used by the military junta dictatorship as an excuse to invade and briefly occupy the islands before being defeated in the two-month-long undeclared Falklands War in 1982 by a United Kingdom task force which returned the islands to British control.
There is disputed evidence of prior settlement by humans, based on the existence of the Falkland Island fox, or Warrah, on the islands, as well as a scattering of undated artifacts including arrowheads and the remains of a canoe.
It is thought this canid was brought to the island by humans, although it may have reached the islands by itself via a land bridge during the last ice age.

The Falkland Islands are located at 51° 45′ 00″ S, 059° 10′ 00″ W. The Falkland Islands are a largely self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom but are claimed by Argentina to be part of its national territory.
Britain invaded the islands in 1833, expelled the remainder of the Argentine settlement, and began to populate the islands with its own citizens.

New Island (2363 hectares), the most remote of all the inhabited islands, is situated in the extreme south-west of the Falklands and contains some of the finest scenery and largest concentrations of wildlife to be found in the archipelago.
In May 1972 the island was purchased by the New Island Preservation Company Ltd. The declared aims of this enterprise were to combine sheep farming with wildlife tourism and scientific research.

A survey in 1990 indicated a population of about 20,000 animals in the Falkland Islands but very little is known about their diet and nothing about their foraging habits.
The fur seal rookery on the south east coast of Bird Island occupies an area of rock slabs and cliff ledges.
In addition to the local fur seal population, a small female Antarctic fur seal stayed at the rookery for at least a week in February, and an adult female sub-antarctic fur eal and her pup were present from January to April.
