Becan is located near the center of the Yucatán Peninsula, in the state of Campeche, Mexico, about 150 km north of Tikal.
Archeological evidence shows that Becan was occupied in the middle Pre-Classic period (see: Mesoamerican chronology), about 550 BC, and grew to a major population and ceremonial center a few hundred years later in the late Preclassic.
From 1969 to 1971 archeological excavations were made at Becan sponsored by Tulane University and the National Geographic Society.

Becan archeological zone is located on the Southeast of the state of Campeche.
Becan is clasified by investigators as a Regional Capital, it is one of the most important architectural sites in Campeche, on Río Bec region.
However its most prosperous period was between 600 and 1000 AD, when the city was considered as the capital of the region due to its strategic location (almost in the middle of the base of the peninsula), where goods and services from sorrounding towns were concentrated.

Becan, however, is not an old or authentic place name, but was conferred on the site in 1934 by archaeologists of the Third Campeche Expedition sponsored by the Division of Historical Research of the Carnegie Institution of Washington D.C. This expedition reached the site on February 20, 1934 to investigate reports received the previous month.
The map portrayed on this sign is based on a drawing by David F. Potter which attempts to reconstruct Becan as it appeared at the peak of its development around A.D. 800, shortly after the cessation of major construction.
Excavations at Becan in 1970-71 were undertaken by contract with the Instituto Nacional de Antropologia e Historia of Mexico (INAH).

In Mayan, Becan means "Ravine formed by Water", and the city is ringed by a 2 kilometer long 50 foot wide protective moat, behind which are remains of a wall that was about 10' high.
The town has seven gateways, approached by 'sacbes', ceremonial causeways that were paved with plaster.

I flew into Cancun on the 9th and then took a bus to Piste, Yucatan, where I spent the night.
After spending the morning and afternoon of the 12th in Palenque, I caught the overnight bus to Chetumal.
