Despite all this, Beck was climbing to his peak by now, and his flashy brilliance is impossible to ignore - especially on the original numbers: the howling "Ice Cream Cakes"; the soul-drenched "Highways"; and the stately, gut-wrenching, 3/4 time jazz instrumental "Definitely Maybe," which pointed to later triumphs.
Beck's idea was to cover a whole bunch of tunes by the Gene Vincent band, which featured a lead guitarist named Cliff Gallup who Beck seems to worship.

Beck Bogert & Appice | CHOM
Although the all-star power trio of guitarist Jeff Beck, bassist Tim Bogert, and drummer Carmine Appice discussed a potential collaboration as early as 1970, the project went on indefinite hiatus after Beck suffered a fractured skull in an automobile wreck.
In the meantime, following his recovery Beck founded a new incarnation of his Jeff Beck Group, releasing a pair of albums before disbanding the project in 1972; with Bogert and Appice again available, the threesome immediately set to work on recording, issuing Beck, Bogert and Appice to solid sales in 1973.
A much sought after live album was subsequently issued in Japan only, but while working on a second studio effort, the famously mercurial Beck abruptly dissolved the trio in early 1974.

Hailed by many as the greatest rock virtuoso guitarist of all time, Jeff Beck's career stretches back to the early days of the British Invasion and leads up to the present day, where he can still be found out on the road playing an ever-evolving sound.
One of the early experimenters with feedback and distortion, Beck was getting session work from his friend Jimmy Page in the early '60s, dazzling other studio guitarists, such as the young Ritchie Blackmore, with his wildly experimental style.
Produced by the Beatles' producer George Martin, the two albums were jazz fusion with a rock attitude, performed in a hitherto unheard of style, with synthesizer wizard Jan Hammer collaborating.

Tim Bogert's unique combination of melodic ingenuity, and gutsy roaring speed, brought new dimensions to the role of the electric bass player back in 1967.

In actual fact, that would be a hopeless task, given the amount of anonymous session work that the guitarist did circa 1964-1966, but "Beckology" still manages to touch a few unexpected bases, even as it strings together all of the obvious and most of the important sides in Beck's output.
There are flaws in this set, to be sure; originally conceived as a four-disc retrospective, it was reduced to three, over Beck's wishes that some proposed cuts be omitted and Sony Music's timidity over the sales prospect of the four-CD set.
The mastering of it all is so clean that it put most of the older versions of this material to shame at the time.
