The Beck Center, a planned addition to Statler Hall on Cornell's campus, was dedicated June 10 in honor of former Hotel School Dean Robert A. Beck and his late wife, Jan M. Beck.
Construction of the Beck Center, a 36,000-square-foot teaching facility to be added to Statler Hall, is expected to begin in fall 2002 and be completed by 2004.
Participating in the dedication ceremony for the Beck Center were President Hunter Rawlings; Beck, the honoree; and the current dean, Butler.

At 35,000 square feet, the Beck Center features a lecture hall for 140, three case study rooms (including one equipped for distance learning), two classrooms, eight interview rooms, two group study rooms, informal seating areas, an expanded computer center and a hospitality suite to welcome visitors.
What distinguishes the Beck Center classrooms from other Statler classrooms is their leading-edge technology, said Neal Geller '64, the Robert Beck Professor at the hotel school and the first professor to teach in the new facility.
The center is named after Robert Beck '42, the second dean of the hotel school, and his wife, Jan. They "served the hotel school with distinction for much of its 82-year history," said hotel school Dean David Butler last Thursday.

Woodruff Library, the Data Center provides researchers at Emory with access to a broad collection of numeric data, workstations with statistical and mapping software and a knowledgeable staff with expertise in data development and quantitative research.
The Electronic Data Center at Emory University is one of a handful of full-service Data Centers among universities in the United States.

A student working in the Beck Center (who was taking a literature and ecology course taught by Cattier) noticed the manuscript and mentioned his class to Spornick.
His idea was not just for the center to purchase and maintain electronic databases, which it was already doing and continues to do (for about 150 databases at last count), but to create Emory's own databases.
The Beck Center currently works on about a half-dozen of these projects, the best-known of which is the Emory Women Writers Resource Project, done in conjunction with the English department.

Before anyone else, Basse Beck realized the "clear and present" dangers threatening the Susquehanna River from those who would exploit it at the expense of the public.
One only need to read Basse's newspaper column, "Up and Down the River" to appreciate the depth of his commitment to the proposition that the Susquehanna River is a public natural resource which belongs to all of the people and must be protected and preserved for all time to come.

 NLRB Nominations: No Joy for Beck Rights [Mackinac Center for Public Policy]
Your Jan. 9 editorial "Beck and Beyond" contained many important points but failed to assess the likelihood that the Beck case could realistically be enforced according to the Supreme Court's directions, due to the status of pending NLRB nominations.
Currently three Clinton holdover members of the board have signed onto cases eroding Beck rights (which establishes that unions can't spend dues money on political causes their dues-paying members don't support).
Unless the Bush administration reassesses the board appointments with respect to Beck rights, worker political freedom will remain in the deep freeze for the forseeable future.
