BedZED - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
BedZED or the Beddington Zero Energy Development, is an environmentally-friendly housing development near Beddington, England.
BedZED was designed by the architect Bill Dunster who was looking for a more sustainable way of building housing in urban areas.
The project was conducted as a partnership between BioRegional, The Peabody Trust and Bill Dunster Architects.

 Bedzed Text
We visited Bedzed in winter when the shadows were just past their greatest lengths and were pleasantly surprised to see the extent of sun penetration throughout the development.
Bedzed draws on the tradition of high density, very simple, repetitive terraces that have dominated London and indeed all the large English cities for the past 100 years.
The house types at Bedzed however, could only benefit from the sun from a southerly aspect, as the length of shadows from an east west sun position would cause severe shading in winter, precisely when heat input from the sun is required.

BedZED is an award winning, 92 home urban village, in south London, that has demonstrated that carbon neutral ecological living can be affordable, attractive and commercially successful.
BedZED has its origins with the BioRegional Development Group, an independent environmental organisation which develops products and services designed to meet our everyday needs from local renewable and waste resources, and to demonstrate that humans can live quite happily while consuming only their fair share of the Earth’s resources.
BedZED is a deliberately high density settlement, with 82 homes on just 1.6 hectares, including a large green open space with space for allotment gardens, and yet every home has either a conservatory, and/or a private rooftop garden on top of the workspace roofs that can accommodate raised beds.

BedZED meets all its energy demands from renewable, carbon-neutral sources, generated on site, and so eliminates the 29% contribution to CO 2 emissions and global warming.
The total embodied CO 2 of BedZED is 675kg/m 2, whilst typical volume house builders build to 600-800kg/m 2.
BedZED's local sourcing policy was able to source 52% of the materials from within the target 35 mile radius.

Called BedZED by its creator and "the UK's most revolutionary housing" by the Manchester Guardian, the 82-unit development is built on the cleaned-up site of an old sewage plant and blends work and living space, rentals and private homes.
BedZED’s bricks were made locally, reducing transport costs and pollution; its wood exterior is sustainably logged green oak, also from a local source.
In fact, according to Dunster, if BedZED's density were replicated, the UK could restore and reuse the nation's brownfields, or contaminated properties, and build the 3 million homes the government says are needed by 2016 with no loss of open space.

BedZED's attempt to apply this principle to the design of settlements is of the greatest interest and importance.
Settlements based on the BedZED model are planned for the Thames Valley and Portugal, and the medium-term aim is to establish five One Planet Living Communities around the world on every continent in both developed and developing countries by 2009.
