Topic: Bedazzled (2000 movie)

  Bedazzled (2000)
The movie, a remake of Dudley Moore and Peter Cook's classic 1967 comedy, is a veritable Hades fashion show, and if there's one thing Hurley knows how to do, it's strut her stuff.
Bedazzled's script is uneven, the supporting cast (including up-and-coming funnyman Orlando Jones) is underused, and some of the jokes are worse than clichéd (for example, the Devil has offices in "purgatory, hell, and Los Angeles"...
It's just too bad that the movie doesn't have more of this subtle interplay instead of overdone scenes with the Devil faking tears and trying to convince Elliot that she really wants to be his friend.

MMI Movie Review: Bedazzled (2000)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
The original "Bedazzled" was so funny that some audience members actually fell out of their seats and pounded the floor in hysterics.
But most people don't go to the movies just to see the costumes, so I'm going to have to be mean here and say that the parts of "Bedazzled" (2000) that are funny are not new and the parts that are new are not funny.
On record for saying that the first thing she did when seeing herself in the tabloids was lose 15 pounds and that she'd kill herself if she ever got as fat as Marilyn Monroe, Hurley oozes physical perfection but no real emotion.

  JoBlo reviews the movie "Bedazzled"
The movie was funny, especially the sensitive guy with the sunsets.
I thought the movie had a nice message, showing that you'll never get any happiness trying to be somebody else, and there are more important things than wealth, power and all the other things that people chase.
Bedazzled is a dazzling, funny, comedy with a surprisingly sweet side.

 The Movie Lovers - Bedazzled
Fortunately for the viewer, the plot of the movie enables us to be treated to a host of other characters, all played by Fraser with flare and panache.
There are few movies which so obviously illustrate the old adage "be careful what you wish for." For while Richards gets what he wishes for, in each case his wish has unforeseen consequences which prevent him from achieving his goal.
"Bedazzled" loses points for a cliched plot, but the score levels due to its wit and panache, as well as the truth of the inevitable morals: be careful what you wish for, and sometimes the best place to find happiness is in your own back yard (and your little dog, too).

Bedazzled (2000 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bedazzled is a 2000 motion picture, and is a remake of the original Bedazzled (1967) originally written by Peter Cook.
This is a reference to Archbishop James Ussher, who used a literal interpretation of the Bible to calculate that the world was created on Sunday 23 October 4004 B.C. The schoolgirl outfit Elizabeth Hurley wore in the movie is in fact her own old school uniform.
The car Elizabeth Hurley/The Devil drives in the movie is a Lamborghini Diablo, an obvious reference to the Devil, as "diablo" is Spanish for "devil."

BEDAZZLED suffers the curse of the needless remake.
It's certainly not an awful movie; it does have some good moments and watching Fraser and Frances O'Connor in different vignettes is amusing.
The list grows ever longer of those who are waiting for the 2000 "Bedazzled" to fade from view so that the owners of the rights to the 1967 "Bedazzled" will finally come to their senses and release it digitalized on DVD.

 Dudley Moore: Bedazzled - Movie
Cook and Moore, by both word and action, refer back to Marlowe's tragedy of "Dr. Faustus," to Goethe's epic drama "Faust," and even to Hannah Arendt's theory of the "banality" of evil with reference to the Holocaust, and they do it with the wacky finesse one associates with Monty Python.
This film bedazzles the world-weary viewer back into having faith in the future of humanity.
I love this movie and I can't wait until it is available on DVD.

 TheMovieBoy Review: Bedazzled (2000)
At the risk of making a throwaway pun, "Bedazzled," directed by Harold Ramis (1993's "Groundhog Day"), is a devilishly enjoyable and savvy comedy that ends of packing quite a heavier punch by its conclusion than could have ever been expected.
Had "Bedazzled" stayed on its predictable main course from beginning to end, the picture would be admirable, but hardly memorable.
Throughout the just-right 92-minute running time, "Bedazzled" is whimsical and reasonably lighthearted, but because Elliot has, indeed, sold his soul to Satan, the viewer is understandable to wonder how exactly the movie could conclude with a happy ending.

Bedazzled (1967 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bedazzled is a 1967 motion picture retelling of the Faust legend set in the Swinging London of the 1960s.
Films exploiting and celebrating the social and economic freedoms of the so-called swinging 60s were common, but Peter Cook and Dudley Moore's comedy attempted to both amuse and to reassert the Faust legend's caveats about greed and sexual passion.
It was remade under the same title in 2000.

August 1, 2000 -- "Bedazzled" is a movie that has plenty of talent on both sides of the camera, but doesn't produce much bang for the firepower it has.
"Bedazzled" is, indeed a remake of a 1967 film of the same name.
Greed, avarice, the worshiping of false gods, selfishness, adultery and pride ought to be a simple connection for Hollywood types to make and there is certainly adequate fodder for a movie there, but this film misses the mark almost entirely.

Bedazzled has its rare funny moments (many directly lifted from Cook's original screenplay), but the film is sabotaged by an insulin shock-inducing ending — see the devil isn't so bad, after all.
There is a good movie here dying to get out, but it's not the film that Ramis made.
Ramis' Bedazzled may be preferable to sitting home alone on a Friday night continually hitting yourself over the head with a hammer — but not by much.

Incidentally, finding good laughs in this movie was not helped by 20th Century Fox's ubiquitous "Bedazzled" preview this summer, which essentially gave away most of the jokes and high points.
Essentially, the movie consists of Elliot's desires, followed by the Devil's short-circuiting of those desires.
I don't want to be like the "Bedazzled" trailer and spoil any more jokes, but when Elliot wishes to be the most emotionally sensitive guy in the world, it's a hilarious scene.

"Bedazzled" is the story of a man named Elliot Richards (played with great effort by Brendan Fraser, no matter what else you might say, you can't accuse him of not trying).
All in all, this is not a bad movie, but it leaves one feeling a long way from "bedazzled".

Bedazzled runs Old Scratch up the flagpole once again--but this time it's played for laughs.
So basically, Bedazzled tells seven different stories, in the form of Fraser's wishes, and naturally none of his dreams turn out to be quite what he expected.
Bedazzled is certainly not the best comedy ever made, but it does offer several laugh-out-loud moments and a very likable comedic turn by Fraser.

Bedazzled is a surprisingly smart, genuinely funny movie about the wishes we all make and the fallacy of our belief that wealth, fame, love, etc., will truly make us happy.
My favorite couple of seconds from the trailer was not actually in the movie, and the featurette informs us that there was originally a scene with Hurley taking on the guise of a French maid.
The new Bedazzled avoids the main flaw of the original, namely that whatever the scene, Cook and Moore effectively played out their familiar personae over and over again.

"Bedazzled" / a review from Christian Spotlight on the Movies
Drawing from the 1967 prototype that starred Dudley Moore, Peter Cook and Raquel Welch, Bedazzled breathes life into the droll yet trite story line with simplistic ease because the devil, as it were, is in the film's details rather than in its overall concept.
If you approach the movie only to be entertained and not look for deep spiritual truths, most people will enjoy it.
All of the other movies I wanted to see were sold out, and I live 1/2 hour from the theater, so I decided to risk it.

Bedazzled Movie Review by Anthony Leong from MediaCircus.net
"Bedazzled", the latest comedy from "Analyze This" director Harold Ramis, is a remake of the 1967 British film of the same name.
And though "Bedazzled" 2.0 stumbles in a number of places, it still manages to be a somewhat enjoyable time-waster, mainly on the strength of Fraser's charm and Hurley's 'devilish' enthusiasm.
"Bedazzled" is not a 'laugh-out-loud' sort of comedy-- it is more the kind of movie that will give you a silly grin across your face for most of the running time, with the occasional bit of breakthrough hilarity.

Bedazzled. _A Hollywood Jesus Movie Review
While watching Bedazzled I noticed that the Devil's office was full of art that recalled The Fall: Eve and the apple, Adam and Eve with fig leaves, and so forth.
I was impressed with the way the story emphasized each person's responsibility to choose his or her fate, rather than taking the easy route and letting Elliot blame his bad decisions on his upbringing or his treatment at work.
It was also nice to see a movie that let the Devil (and the angel/God-figure) be ambiguous in appearance: the Devil acts like a friend and wears an angel costume, the angel/God-figure poses as a prisoner and wears all fl.

Up close, her angular features and hollow gaze make her as frightening as she is gorgeous, not to mention the annoying bouncy walk that makes you dizzy to watch and a wardrobe change factor that clocks in at once every six minutes.
Bedazzled drags its one-joke scenes through far too many poorly-timed comic moments, with each of its hokey-jokey sequences going on for far longer than is humanly funny (notably one scene about Elliot having been given a small willy becomes truly painful).
The movie is so limp it is all but forgotten on the ride home.

Harold Ramis, who directed this movie and is best known for directing such classics as Caddyshack, Ghostbusters, and Analyze This, seems to be holding back on this film.
Bedazzled lacks it's gopher, that funny little scene which is included for no other reason than it's extremely funny, and the movie suffers because of it.

 Bedazzled - Rotten Tomatoes
Though it has its funny moments, this remake is essentially a one-joke movie with too many flat spots.
BEDAZZLED is a fiery romantic comedy starring Brendan Fraser as Elliot Richards, a bored and boring computer programmer who is in love with Alison Gardner (Frances O'Connor), a lovely coworker who doesn't even know he exists.
Funny as Fraser is, he can't eliminate those extraneous stunts and special effects, he can't turn a series of scenes into a coherent whole, and he can't steer the film away from its sappy, programmatic ending.

The 11th Hour Web Magazine - Movie Review - Bedazzled
Not good, not bad, but just sort of there, Bedazzled is a good way to kill two hours if all other earthly distractions have failed you.
To be fair, Fraser is really great in this movie; showing an utter lack of restraint, he's funny and imaginative in each mini-performance, and carries the movie through to the end.
I would have loved to see Bedazzled in the hands of someone like Austin Powers' Jay Roach (the one man, seemingly, with the ability to coax a performance out of the mannequin-like Hurley), who would allow the film to flow a little freer and move a little faster.
