Bede pushed the kitplane design envelope again with the BD-4 by building the wing using his patented "panel-rib" process.
Bede fixed the lack of directional stability as soon as flight-testing began late in September 1971.
Bede claimed that the powerplant sipped just 4 gallons per hour of fuel to give the BD-5 the range to fly about 1,610 km (1,000 miles) at a ceiling of 4,256 m (14,000 ft).

Bede BD-5 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Bede BD-5 is a small, single-seat homebuilt kit aircraft that was introduced in the early 1970s by Bede Aircraft Corp. It was designed by Jim Bede.
It is a pusher aircraft design, with the engine installed in a compartment in the middle of the fuselage, and a propeller in the rear.
The BD-5J is the jet version of the aircraft, the result of mating the BD-5 fuselage and a shortened 17-foot (5.18 m) wingspan with the Microturbo TRS-18 turbojet engine, manufactured by Microturbo in Toulouse, France, and by Ames Industrial in the United States under license from Microturbo.

Aircraft designer, Jim Bede had established himself as a smart designer for amateur kit built aircraft and though he came up with some great designs this was by far the most interesting and perhaps had the greatest effect on the industry as a whole.
Bede developed a honey comb structure which formed the wing with the skin "bonded" forming a rivet less smooth wing.
The aircraft concept with its canopy and low price was upgraded with various combinations of interior packages, the most popular being the "Tiger" and the aircraft was fitted with up to 180hp power.

They continued to reduce the number of "like" parts on the aircraft, which increased the cost to beyond that of the trainers they were wrongly trying to compete with in the first place.

Jim Bede and his father James Bede with the intention to develop and produce in series light aircraft formed Bede Aircraft in 1961.
Bede’s first design XBD-2 was a twin-engined high-lift pusher STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) research aircraft.
In the wing upper surface 164,000 holes were drilled, varying from 0.020 to 0.029 in (0.5 to 0.737 mm), to suck the air from the wing and discharge it rearwards through thrust augmentors.

Some aircraft kit manufacturing offer quick built kits, these meet the 51% rule, but do have a great deal of sub assembly work already fabricated.
By reducing the total number of parts on the aircraft to 110 items, it is obvious these can be assembled in one-tenth the time it would take to assemble a project of 1100 parts.

Bede explains, "I wanted to design an airplane as personal transportation that a nonprofessional pilot could fly easily It contains no complicated systems, yet is exceptionally stable and reliable." The BD-10 is even being scrutinized by a number of foreign governments as a possible trainer.
But Bede believes the noise footprint of the BD-10 is so small at 0.7 pounds-per-square-foot over pressure (a measure of noise pollution; any value under one is technically inaudible), compared to over 2.3 for the Concorde SST, that supersonic cross-country flight might become a reality some day.
FAA regulations require the owner to actually be involved in at least 51 percent of the aircraft's construction process to qualify it as an experimental aircraft.

Jim Bede - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bede was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and studied aeronautical engineering at Wichita State University, graduating in 1958.
Bede felt the way to solve this problem was to have the prospective pilot build their own aircraft, as labor costs were a major part of the overall price of a delivered aircraft.
Bede also moved on to design the BD-6, a smaller BD-4 with the Hirth engine, and the "new" Bede BD-7, a two-seat side-by-side version of the BD-5 of which a prototype was built.
