  Did Target Miss the Boat?
Beder said in a research note that without the Mervyn's and Marshall Field's stores in the company's repertoire, investors are sure to notice that Target has had less-than-steady EPS growth in the past few years -- a trend he sees continuing in 2004.
Beder concedes that a sale makes sense, partly because of the amount of money that would be needed to maintain the chains in the coming years.
Beder noted that if results are adjusted for the rollout of the company's Target Visa program in 2001, the Target division had double-digit operating income growth when faced with a double-digit comparison during only two quarters in the last three years.

Beder describes the deceptive and unethical tactics employed by corporations whose profits are directly threatened by environmental regulation.
Beder describes how corporations are able to determine and edit the way in which environmental issues are reported in the media by owning media channels, flmailing media sources (by threatening to withdraw advertising revenue) and "wooing journalists".
The only minor criticism of Beder is her resentment of corporations for making significant profits, which I think is due largely to her dislike of capitalist societies.

Beder is strong in her criticism of the media and in particular of journalists, some of whom she portrays as lazy, as they take a media release from a major corporation and run it as a news feature (p.113).
The big loser in all this is the public, and Sharon Beder is strong in her view that all facts should be on the table and that we should avoid, as mentioned by Fiona Schutt, manipulative facts and figures.
Beder can rest assured that she will raise the level of public awareness and public questioning about the validity and reliability of the information they are served.
