Bedford is located at 44°43'55"N, 63°39'24"W in the Bedford/Sackville region of the Halifax / Dartmouth Trail, Halifax county.
The Community of Bedford is the jewel of the Halifax metro area.
Then the highway, the basin and the village at the head of the Bedford Basin took on the name of Bedford in the honour of John Russell, the 4th Duke of Bedford and Secretary of State for the colonies in 1749.

Bedford Basin is a large enclosed bay, forming the northwestern end of Halifax Harbour on Canada's Atlantic coast.
Bedford on the northwestern corner takes its name from the basin, while Dartmouth sits on its eastern shore and Rockingham occupies the majority of the western shore.
The lands surrounding the basin are heavily developed with the only significant greenspace remaining being a significant blast buffer zone surrounding the Canadian Navy's (MARCOM) Atlantic Fleet (MARLANT) weapons magazine on the northeastern shore of the basin.

Bedford, NS, Urban Community, is situated at the head of Bedford Basin, in HALIFAX Regional Municipality.
Both the basin and the community were named in honour of John Russell, fourth duke of Bedford (1710-71), who was secretary of state for the colonies when Halifax was founded in 1749.
At first called Sackville when established as a fort in 1749 to keep open the overland route to Minas and to protect against Native raids, it took its present name in 1856 when the Nova Scotia Railway (later the Intercolonial) built a station in the area.

As part of the consent decree discussed above, the City of New Bedford is required to construct and implement measures to control CSO discharges, which are one of the largest sources of pathogens to Buzzards Bay and the primary cause of shellfish and swimming beach closures around New Bedford.
