The first court house in Bedford County was established in 1810.
On January 25,1811 a notice was carried in the Democratic Clarion and Tennessee Gazette, Nashville, Tennessee for bids on building a brick court house to be 42x38 feet.
The third and forth court houses, which were brick, owned by the county were under construction from 1869 to 1873.

Bedford County is a county located in the state of Tennessee.
The county was created in 1807 when the citizens of Rutherford County living south of the Duck River and the Stones River successfully petitioned the governor to split Rutherford County into two.
In the county, the population is spread out with 25.80% under the age of 18, 9.90% from 18 to 24, 29.70% from 25 to 44, 22.00% from 45 to 64, and 12.70% who are 65 years of age or older.

Bedford County is located in southwestern part of the state of Virginia, between the cities of Roanoke, to the West, and Lynchburg, to the East.

The County seat of Bedford County had been established at or near the Mulberry Community, south of Lynchburg, hence, the remaining territory forming Bedford County was without a county seat.
Bedford County got robbed of more territory in 1836 when five civil districts (12 through 17) were transferred to Marshall County (this taking the birth place of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest out of Bedford County and moving it to Chapel Hill).

Philander Priestly Claxton (1862-1957) was born in Bedford County, Tennessee, He was educated at the Universtiy of Tennessee where he obtained both his Bachelor and Masters of Arts 1882 and 1887 respectively.
He then moved back to his home state of Tennessee in 1902 to take up the post of professor of education at the University of Tennessee where he taught until 1911.
At the University of Tennessee, he organized and headed the first Department of Education and helped to establish the Summer School of the South which, during a sixteen-year existence, improved the education of over 32,000 teachers in southern schools.
