And even the Bedford Minutemen, modern-day battle reenactors who refer to Emerson's poem when talking of the flag, are not 100 percent sure he even meant Bedford.

Bedford RUFC was founded in 1886 after an amalgamation between Bedford Rovers (1876) and Bedford Swifts (1882).
The Bedford colours of dark and light blue are believed to be a reflection of the schoolmasters association with Oxbridge and the full badge colours are based on the strip of Swifts (fl) and Rovers (cerise).
Bedford have been playing on virtually the same pitch for over 100 years and 32 players have gained International honours while they were actually playing for the club at the time of being honoured.

The clock was subscribed to by OBM's and friends and placed in the front elevation of the entrance tower of the old BMS in Harpur Street to commemorate both the end of the War and the visit to Bedford (though not to BMS) of the King and Queen in June 1918.
On 12 April 1915 at Shaiba, Mesopotamia, Major Wheeler took out his squadron in an attempt to capture a flag which was the centre-point of a group of the enemy who were firing on one of our picquets.

In the first big junior race of the season pride of place went to Bedford Modern School's first VIII won their race and were the overall Head winners at an event that welcomed over 1,300 children from 41 different schools and clubs.
It was the second time a Modern team has won the event, their last success coming in 2001, and they are the only club not based on the River Thames to have won the main title.
Bedford School won the Junior Coxed Fours event with relative ease, with four of their first VIII making up the crew, Bedford High School won the equivalent event for girls.

Schools such as Bedford Modern screen out children who might find it difficult to achieve five A-C grades at GCSE, by means of entrance requirements and fees.
When you consider that the Harpur Trust generates £35 million in fees, which gives a per capita spend at least three times that in our state schools and a consequent 40 or more extra teachers per 1,000 pupils, then the results achieved by the two systems can be seen in their true context.
Members of a Home Watch group in Goldington, Bedford, were the first community minded citizens to take part in this initiative and other residents have shown community spirit by cleaning away graffiti quickly to keep their area looking nice.

Henry George (a fellow evacuee and friend) says that, I think he spent four years or five years in Bedford, he said, ‘The happiest years of my life’ and that’s a very strange thing to say when you think the war was on, but it was for him and it was for me really.
We actually beat Bedford Modern School at rowing, the First Eight, eventually the year before we went back, that was a great achievement.
And the funny thing was because there were no Bedford soccer schools at all, maybe at the junior level they played soccer but certainly middle and senior did not play soccer and because of that our soccer improved.

Leave the M1 at junction 14 and approach Bedford on the A422 which joins with the A428 at Bromham.
Leave on the A421 and follow signs for Bedford, passing Bedford RUFC on Goldington Road before you enter the town one-way system where you take the right hand lane.
As there is no right hand turn into Clarendon Street, continue to the Sainsbury’s roundabout and return along Clapham Road, turning left into Clarendon Street which takes you direct to the school fields.
