Ths school has its origins in the endowments of Sir William Harpur in the 16th century, and was known as the Writing School, teaching copperplate handwriting in what is presently the Old Town Hall in Bedford.
In 1974 the school moved to new premises and in 1976 became an independent school.

Bedford RUFC was founded in 1886 after an amalgamation between Bedford Rovers (1876) and Bedford Swifts (1882).
The Bedford colours of dark and light blue are believed to be a reflection of the schoolmasters association with Oxbridge and the full badge colours are based on the strip of Swifts (fl) and Rovers (cerise).
Bedford have been playing on virtually the same pitch for over 100 years and 32 players have gained International honours while they were actually playing for the club at the time of being honoured.

 Old Bedford School History
The school district used the abandoned facility as a garage and warehouse until 1973 when the schoolhouse and its surrounding acreage was sold to the City of Bedford and used as a service center until the current service center was built in March of 1991.
A significant physical and cultural landmark in the city of Bedford, the 1914-15 building represents the dispersed rural communities that metropolitan growth has largely obliterated in the region and stands as one of the last vestiges of this rural development pattern of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The Bedford Historical Foundation is most honored to manage the Old Bedford School, a building loved sufficiently by its community to be raised from its ashes and rebuilt with the same pride felt by its original contractors and trustees.

The excellent local state schools are based on a three-tier system, with Lower Schools (ages five to nine), Middle Schools (ages nine to thirteen) and Upper Schools (ages thirteen to eighteen).

 Roll of Honour - Bedfordshire - Bedford Modern School Memorials
Spencer witnessed Mobbs' heroic effort: ‘In the tornado of hostile shelling he got ahead and seeing a number of his men cut down by an undiscovered machine-gun strong-point, he charged to bomb it, certain death under such a terrific hail of shell.’ Mobbs’ body was never found and he is severally commemorated.
The clock was subscribed to by OBM's and friends and placed in the front elevation of the entrance tower of the old BMS in Harpur Street to commemorate both the end of the War and the visit to Bedford (though not to BMS) of the King and Queen in June 1918.
At school he was regarded as the greatest sportsman BMS ever produced and was a hero to every man and boy who played, and loved the game, of rugby football.

In the first big junior race of the season pride of place went to Bedford Modern School's first VIII won their race and were the overall Head winners at an event that welcomed over 1,300 children from 41 different schools and clubs.
It was the second time a Modern team has won the event, their last success coming in 2001, and they are the only club not based on the River Thames to have won the main title.
Bedford School won the Junior Coxed Fours event with relative ease, with four of their first VIII making up the crew, Bedford High School won the equivalent event for girls.

Tom passed away in January at the age of 90, the oldest living resident born and raised in Bedford and a student at the Bedford School when it first opened its doors in 1915.

We were a public school with a long tradition, founded in 1552, and everybody was very carefully monitored and looked after but it was a very busy school regime.
We also, as I got further up the school, we found ourselves in the JTC, that’s the Junior Training Corp which was originally, in the First World War, had been called the Officer Training Corps and then it was the Junior Training Corps and later on I believe it was given another name.
These were school parties that were taken out and we camped and had a wonderful time working in the orchards during the day and trying not to get to badly stung by wasps and relaxing in the evenings going out for walks in the beautiful countryside there.
