The Bedford Springs Hotel was a large hotel and mineral-water resort located in the Allegheny Mountains just outside Bedford, Pennsylvania.
Vacant and not operational for over a decade in 2003, it was a favored resort during the 19th century, and was frequented by President James Buchanan, who used it as a summer White House.
During World War II, the hotel and grounds were used as a U.S. Navy radio training center, and also as a detention center for interned Japanese diplomats.

The Bedford Springs Hotel closed in October 1987, but the golf course, which opened in 1923 and was designed by Donald Ross, a Scotsman who also designed Pinehurst No. 2 and other golf courses in South Carolina, remains open today.

A man-made lake located to the west of Bedford, near the town of Schellsburg, lake Shawnee is a familiar recreation area for the fisherman, swimmers, and boaters of Bedford County.
The Square in Bedford is dominated by the Courthouse, the Post Office, two churches, Lawyer's Row, and this memorial to county veterans of the Civil War, one of whom was a sharpshooter notorious for killing Confederate General A.P. Hill near the end of the war.

Ed Rendell recently decided to release the money for the Bedford Springs Hotel from the state's redevelopment assistance program, which had been frozen since early last year, gubernatorial spokesman Mike Lukens said.
The money will go toward the $46.5 million that hotel owner Mark Langdale estimates it will take to renovate the nearly 200-year-old hotel, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

I did not realize that it was well beyond the Bedford city limits but that is just part of the wrong thinking that prevented me from finding it yesterday.
