City of Toronto: Union Station history
Union Station was designed in the grand manner of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris by a team of architects composed of the Montreal firm of G.A. Ross and R.H. MacDonald, Hugh Jones of the CPR and John M. Lyle of Toronto.
It was built by Canadian Pacific Railway and Grand Trunk Railway at a time when a railway station was viewed as the gateway to a city, Union Station was the largest and most opulent train station erected in Canada during the last great phase in railway station construction.
The Grand Trunk Railway of Canada established a station at the corner of Front and Bay in 1855; this became Toronto's first Union Station in December 1855, when the Great Western Railway arrived to share the facility with the Grand Trunk Railway.

 Bedford to Hitchin Railway
Though in its later years a cross-country route of secondary importance, the railway from Bedford to Hitchin was originally part of the main line of the Midland Railway to London.
What the railway really lacked for its assured success was an industrial hinterland, the only real industries in the area being the GasWorks and Scrap Yard at Shefford, and a quarry at Henlow where special sidings were constructed.
From this cutting the railway made a wide sweep on the north coming into Shefford and ran accross the valley floor on an embankment which reached its widest part in the goods yard just south of Ampthill Road.

St Pancras railway station - Enpsychlopedia
St Pancras station is a railway station in north central London, United Kingdom, between the new British Library building to its west and Kings Cross station to the east.
The Midland Railway chose for the terminus a site backing onto New Road (later Euston Road) and bounded by St Pancras Road and Brewer Street, a few hundred yards to the east of Euston and immediately to the west of King's Cross station.
From 12 April 2004, trains have been terminating at an interim station occupying part of the extension which is being added to the train shed to allow Eurostar trains to use the station when it becomes the London terminus of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, which is scheduled to be in 2007.

 13271.txt
The railway trucks and waggons are moved about by horses: it is amusing to see the activity with which the heavy brutes often bring a waggon up at a trot, jump out of the way just at the right moment, and allow the waggon to roll up to the right spot by its own momentum.
It was hoped that railway transit would put an end to the dishonesty which was carried on wholesale on the canals; but, where open trucks are used, this expectation has been only partly realised, for the temptation of opportunity has been too strong, for even the superior class of men employed on railways.
Tring station, a mile and a half from the town, may be reached from London, 31.5 miles, in less than an hour by the express train, and the traveller arrives in as wild a district as any in England.

 HISTORICAL NOVA SCOTIAN RAILWAY PHOTOGRAPHS
The station was in need of a coat of paint, the signal arms had been removed but there was still a baggage trolley and a train board.
The first picture is a photo showing the station and part of the village (date unknown) and the second is a postcard showing the rear of the station.
Subsequently, the station burnt down and now all the tracks and the unique RSC-24s which served the area on the Caledonia branch in the 1960s and early 1970s are gone.

 The Billerica & Bedford Railroad
The Hyde Park promoter also succeeded in enticing the people of Bedford with the benefits of his plan--in particular, Dr. William R. Hayden, proprietor of the renouned hotel and resort, Bedford Springs.
Proposed was an 8.63-mile rail line between the Boston and Lowell's station in North Billerica and the Middlesex Central's Bedford Station to the south.
At two Bedford Town Meeting sessions, a majority of votes were counted in favor of funding the initiative--but not the two-thirds majority as required by law.

 Bedford - Northampton
Development pressures are to build and once a route can no longer be recovered, the reopening option will be lost, with the consequence that Olney and surrounding villages (cumulative population of some 10,000 people) will still have to drive 10 miles to the nearest railway station.
BRTA has not got all it wants, the stage of acceptance for the railway is still tentative and weak and there is much distance to go to make the case and get it formally accepted in the scheme of things.
We also want Bedford Borough Council, Bedfordshire County Council and Northamptonshire County Council to be more pro active and supportive for the reopening as we believe it is in their area's strategic interest - see diagram.
