The first plants for the Pinetum were raised at Kew in 1921 and transferred to Bedgebury in 1925 and 1926, to stand alongside existing plantings carried out by Viscount Marshall Beresford, the former owner of the Bedgebury estate.
Bedgebury is also at the forefront of horticulture and currently holds several national collections of conifer cultivars and genera.
Bedgebury Pinetum supports, protects and is increasing the population of UK Red Data Book species: those species of flora, fauna and fungi identified as in need of particular conservation effort.

On Sunday October 7th 1990 I was birdwatching in Bedgebury Pinetum with my wife, Maggie, and son, Richard.
At approximately 13.50 BST we entered the Pinetum from the south east and made our way to an area where we have seen Hawfinches and Bramblings in previous years.
During the following week a Two-barred Crossbill was regularly reported at Bedgebury, and on Saturday Oct.13th, we returned to the Pinetum in the hope of photographing the bird we had seen the previous Sunday.

Earlier today, a ten-strong group were led around Bedgebury Pinetum and adjacent forest by Ranger Steve Peters.
This was followed by several more as the group got their ‘eye in’ and by the end of the morning a juvenile slow worm, a grass snake, a common frog and a pond with great crested newt larvae were added to the list.
Bedgebury is a beautiful area and now has a policy to reduce tree cover to promote biodiversity – giving reptiles a good future on the site.

Bedgebury's not too bad, only 13km's of singletrack tho, with a few other bits in there too.
I've been to Bedgebury quite a few times now as my mate lives quite close and it's now up to about 14km (new section of very boggy doubletrack) and is OK when the ground gets much boggier elsewhere (Downs, anyone!) or when it's dry and quick.
Other than that, save your money and go to Bedgebury, 20 minutes down the road.
