Bedok New Town is the fifth Housing and Development Board (HDB) new town; its development started in April 1973 and continued over some 15 years.
The Bedok Planning Area, an urban planning zone under the Urban Redevelopment Authority, encompasses the Bedok New Town itself, the low-rise private residential areas along Upper East Coast Road, and in the districts of Kembangan, Siglap and Telok Kurau, and the high-rise private condominium developments in the eastern part of Marine Parade.
It was formerly a hilly region and hence the focal point of orientation of the town is the special landscaped park and sports complex built on the higher ground of the town.

Bedok View Secondary School was established and housed at Siglap Malay School as a holding school in January 1977.
In January 1978, the school began functioning in the present premises and was officially opened on 28th September 1979 by Tuan Haji Sha’ari Tadin, the former MP for Bedok.
It was the 139th school built by the government and it was also the first government secondary school to be built within Bedok New Town.

In 1980, a quota was introduced to ensure that no particular racial group concentrated together to prevent racial polarisation, although a CIA World Factbook report criticizes it for lowering the value of property as it made selling HDB flats more difficult.
In late 90s, the HDB concentrated on the upgrading of existing older flats, installing new facilities such as liftss that stop on every floor.
HDB's headquarters was previously located at Bukit Merah, and recently has moved to its new permises HDB Hub in Toa Payoh.
