Bedout or Bedout High, (IPA pronunciation: [bedʉː]) is about 25 km off the northwestern coast of Australia in the Roebuck basin.
Some scientists speculate that Bedout might be the result of a large bolide impact event that occurred around 250 million years ago; a large impact event during that time frame, incurring other factors, could account for the Permian-Triassic extinction event.
The Bedout impact crater is also associated in time with extreme volcanism and the break-up of Pangea.

The first evidence for an impact structure in the Bedout area was based on petroleum exploration company seismic data described in 1996 by Australian petroleum geologist J. Gorter.
It is evident that the Bedout structure was exposed on land during parts of the Triassic and Jurassic, and significant erosion may have taken place.
These include the overall glassy nature of the rock, the presence of feldspars with swallowtail terminations, which is indicative of very rapid crystallization, and the existence of spheroidal glass and extremely siliceous glass, both of which are consistent with impact melting and not with volcanism.

Browny had been to Bedout before with me on a previous trip but for Vaughan and Nugget it was a first.
Even though the tide had turned from the high only a couple of hours earlier it was a slow and careful trip over the reef with all eyes out looking for any bommies as we headed towards the sandy beach on the eastern side of the island.
After crossing the reef we stopped in the sandy bay on the northern tip of Bedout with the intention of throwing lures around for a bit of a play with the resident Queenies.

Evidence is mounting that 251 million years ago, long before the dinosaurs dominated the Earth, a meteor the size of Mount Everest smashed into what is now northern Australia, heaving rock halfway around the globe, triggering mass volcanic eruptions, and wiping out all but about ten percent of the species on the planet.
Simulations of a six-mile wide rock striking the area suggest a crater rim should be visible about 60 miles from the central dome, and despite the extreme age of the impact site and the rearrangement of continental plates since then, there is evidence of a rim at that distance.
Coincidentally, the Bedout crater, at 120 miles across, is almost exactly the same size as the Chicxulub crater in the Caribbean that has been identified as the impact site of the meteorite that dealt the dinosaurs their death blow.
