Bedroom community - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
A bedroom community, dormitory town, or commuter town is a town or city that is primarily residential in character, with most of its residents commuting to a nearby town or city to earn their livelihood.
The distinction between a suburb and a bedroom community is not always clear, but as a general rule suburbs are developed in areas adjacent to main employment centers, whereas bedroom communities once were autonomous places that over time attracted a predominance of commuters.
Bedroom communities may be in rural or semi-rural areas, but urban sprawl and conurbation have erased clear lines among towns and cities in large metropolitan areas.

Philosophy in the Bedroom - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Philosophy in the Bedroom (La Philosophie Dans le Boudoir) is a play written by the Marquis de Sade in 1795 in the aftermath of the French Revolution.
She is a fifteen-year-old virgin naive of all things sexual, and has been brought up by her mother to be well-mannered, modest and obedient.
Dolmánce is the dominant one of the group; he explains to Eugénie that morality, compassion, religion and modesty are all absurd notions that stand in the way of the sole aim of human existence: pleasure.

 In the Bedroom (2001): Reviews
Set in a tranquil town on the coast of Maine, In the Bedroom tells the story of a couple (Spacek, Wilkinson) whose only child is involved in a love affair with a single mother (Tomei).
The surehandedly wrought, beautifully acted, almost unbearably tense In the Bedroom is a rare film, not to be missed.
For all its flaws, In the Bedroom is an unusual accomplishment, a serious drama about violence and morality that plays out with a fatalistic intensity somewhere between Greek tragedy and film noir.

The panning and cuts are slow and intentional, but the one time they are not we are looking around as quickly as the camera moves, and the camera becomes as invisible to us as it does the people it is recording; we might as well be in the room as spectating spectors.
Bedroom is about vengence, anger, and justice, all lofty undetakings indeed but the characters (even the “antagonist”) are never patronized or molded into the set narrative of a morality play.
Regardless, In the Bedroom is an emotionally demanding movie of us if only because it needs to in order to demand so little of the characters, and wants instead for them merely to be themselves.

In the Bedroom also compares to last year's The Deep End, and Sam Raimi's underrated A Simple Plan, two other slow movies that dealt with how small town folk deal with problems and how those problems sometimes lead to more drastic actions.
It's never clear whether the Fowlers disapprove of their son's relationship is because the woman is older and has two kids or because of the problems that her estranged husband brings to the relationship.
In the Bedroom proves him to be quite a talented dramatic lead actor, as his performance allows him the full range of emotions, and he creates a character as believable and real as Spacek's.

First of all, let me tell you that the phrase “In the bedroom” is a fisherman’s term regarding lobsters in traps.
“In the bedroom” centers around Matt and Ruth Fowler’s (Sissy Spacek, Tom Wilkinson) concern about a romance between their son Frank, a college boy (Nick Stahl), and a woman who is about 10 years older (Marisa Tomei as Natalie Strout).
The film is character-driven, and the characters are realistic and engaging.

BBC - Films - review - In the Bedroom
In a year where Oscar candidates are even thinner on the ground than usual, Todd Field's intense, superbly acted chamber piece has emerged as a leading contender.
But if "In the Bedroom" does scoop a few statuettes in March, it will probably be down to its cast, who root the rather melodramatic narrative in recognisably human emotions and failings.
The peace and tranquillity of a small village in Maine is shattered when the son of doctor Matt Fowler (Wilkinson) and his music teacher wife Ruth (Spacek) is killed by his girlfriend's ex-husband.

One such film is "In the Bedroom", a centralized family drama mixing a powerful cocktail of drama, tension and thrills — but rarely stepping outside of its claustrophobic circle.
"In The Bedroom", as it draws closer to it’s finale, ignites a revengeful streak in Matt, whose kind doctor contemplates payback on the man that murdered his son.
Pre-packaged like a play, "In the Bedroom" will win acclaim for it’s talent and screenplay, but doesn’t have the universal appeal that it really needs.

The remainder of In the Bedroom deals with Matt and Ruth's individual reactions to the act, and their reactions to each other.

The crime is presented in a stark and shocking fashion, and its multi-faceted impact is detailed in a manner that is as non-manipulative as it is powerful.
In the Bedroom also addresses the frustration and anguish of crime victims, especially in cases when the perpetrators of a crime appear beyond the reach of legal punishment.

In the Bedroom rarely puts a foot wrong: only the title was perhaps a miscalculation, with its suggestion of steamy rompings.
It's a very individual film and it's definitely not going to be to everyone's taste, some might very see it as quite a boring and slow tale, others might view the lack of action almost as a lack of imagination.
In the Bedroom is a very good film, albeit one that is bleak & may leave the viewer reeling in misery like films such as The Ice Storm and The Pledge.

First-time director Todd Field, who adapted the film from a story by Andre Dubus with screenwriter Rob Festinger, quietly observes the loss, rage, and inexorable desire for revenge that follows the murder of a 21-year-old son.
Looking at other reviews, there are also apparently those who can't tell the difference between a cliche and an authentically acted tale of everyday people in extraordinary circumstances; the story told here is not as important as the way it's told.
"In the Bedroom" is one of those rare smallish dramas that makes the viewer feel like a fly on the wall, and that's one reason some viewers don't get it; they find real life boring, and expect (and need) explosions, nude scenes, gore, and filth to make them feel something.

Even the film's title, as we learn in one of its first scenes, is primarily a metaphor for imprisonment and death, and only a glancing reference to sex or matrimony: The "bedroom" is the innermost chamber of a lobster trap.
Frank's romantic vision of the traditional life in his hometown of Camden, Maine, is also influenced by his liaison with Natalie (Marisa Tomei), a 30-ish single mom with a working-class Down East accent and some unfinished business with her estranged husband Richard (William Mapother).
One of the distinguishing characteristics of "In the Bedroom" is that Field's focus is not on this unstable triangle but on Frank's parents, Matt (Tom Wilkinson), a prominent Camden doctor, and Ruth (Sissy Spacek), who teaches choral singing at the high school.

In the Bedroom, inspired by Andre Dubus's short story "Killings," is now a feature Miramax film directed by Todd Field.
Matt Fowler, played by Tom Wilkerson, is a doctor practicing in his native Maine and is married to New York born Ruth, played by Sissy Spacek, a choral music teacher.
Setting the film on the coast of Maine is a good choice-the state's natural summer beauty along with its more foreboding winter complement the film.

"In the bedroom" alludes not to the passion of the young but the unspoken understanding between lovers of long standing.
Matt and Ruth Fowler (Tom Wilkinson: The Patriot and Sissy Spacek: Affliction) are college-age Frank's (Nick Stahl: The Thin Red Line) parents, and they're not exactly thrilled that he's spending his summer with Natalie (Marisa Tomei: Happy Accidents), a good decade older than him, divorced, with two little boys.
So spare and true to the rhythms of life is this film that its sudden turns leave you as shell-shocked as genuine tragedy might -- it seems belittling to call In the Bedroom a mere thriller, to suggest that it has to resort to movie trickery to grab you and rivet you to your seat.
