Topic: Bedroom community

Bedroom community - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A bedroom community, dormitory town, or commuter town is a community that is primarily residential in character, with most of its workers commuting to a nearby town or city to earn their livelihood.
Bedroom communities may be in rural or semi-rural areas, but urban sprawl and conurbation have erased clear lines among towns and cities in large metropolitan areas.
Because the bedroom community collects few business taxes, individuals are often forced to pay the brunt of the public operating budget in higher property or income taxes.

A bedroom community, dormitory town, or commuter town is a town or city that is primarily residential in character, with most of its residents commuting to a nearby town or city to earn their livelihood.
The distinction between a suburb and a bedroom community is not always clear, but as a general rule suburbs are developed in areas adjacent to main employment centers, whereas bedroom communities once were autonomous places that over time attracted a predominance of commuters.
Other communities start as small villages in rural areas, where employees seek to have a home that is beyond noisy urban life.

Reflections on Building Community - Islam America
Each of the "communities" to which we belong is characterized by the attributes we hold in common with other members of that particular community.
Within these communities are groups that struggle to maintain their identity, picking their way through the streets, the institutions, and the recreational locations that make up the "community." Major segments of the American population try to live behind these invisible walls.
Meanwhile, the "community" created by the developer so carefully to integrate schools, shopping, parks, homes, and so on is full of empty houses, a "bedroom community," in which people are seldom home.

As an international workshop leader, speaker, activist, and counselor on subjects such as women's roles in Catholicism and community-level racial diversity, Bray is usually the first to put a spin on convention--even when it comes to choosing a place for her home office.
Bray chose instead to make over the master bedroom suite of the three-bedroom penthouse in Stamford, Conn., that she and her husband moved into in 1999.
As a tour of Bray's office space begins, you can't help becoming envious as you notice two things: the abundance of closet space at her fingertips (an added benefit of transforming a master bedroom into a full-scale office) and the never-ending view.

United Communities, a Calgary-based developer with significant landholdings in Okotoks (which is overseeing the project) and Calgary's Sterling Homes (which is building the houses) signed on for similar reasons.

Only in a worst-case scenario could the city and county evolve to a bedroom community, in which at least 51 percent of residents commute outside the area to work, said Patrick Barker, executive director of the Winchester-Frederick County Economic Development Commission.
Barker said it would take a drastic shift in demographics for Winchester and Frederick County to become a bedroom community by the year 2030: If three quarters of new workers commute to jobs outside the county and 15 percent of existing workers shift to a commuting lifestyle.
