Farce - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Many farces move at a frantic pace toward the climax, in which the initial problem is resolved one way or another, often through a deus ex machina twist of the plot.
Farce in general is highly tolerant of transgressive behavior, and tends to depict human beings as vain, irrational, venal, infantile, and prone to automatism.
Farce is, in fact, not merely a genre but a highly flexible dramatic mode that often occurs in combination with other forms, including romantic comedy.

 Boundary Players - Bedroom Farce
In Alan Ayckbourn's Bedroom Farce the stage is set with three bedrooms, that of Trevor's parents, of Jan and Nick (Jan being one of Trevor's old flames) and of Malcolm and Kate, the poor couple who hold the party that Trevor and Susannah so successfully ruin with their arguments.
A complex lighting plot was required as the lights switched from bedroom to bedroom, and this was well-handled and cued by the crew.
Bedroom Farce is not so dark some of the later Ayckbourn comedies and provides plenty of good laughs and is very suitable for a mixed audience of all ages - this was evident from a super response from the audience on the first night.

Comentary on Bedroom Farce by Alan Ayckbourn
When the French say, "Bedroom Farce" they mean mistaken identities, people going in and out of doors and just missing each other, and beds not used for sleeping.
The "stage" consists of the master bedrooms in three different houses and the action is mostly conversation.
Meanwhile, in the third bedroom, Trevor's parents, Ernest and Delia are celebrating their anniversary by eating pilchard and toast in bed.

ALAN Ayckbourn's play Bedroom Farce is not a farce at all; the characters are far too believable.
The bedroom of Ernest and Delia, parents of Trevor, the bedroom of Nick and Jan, Jan having been a former sweetheart of Trevor, and the bedroom of Kate and Malcolm who are throwing a party.
The director and designer have triumphed over the difficulties of having three separate bedrooms on the stage at once and apart from some oddly obscuring lighting effects (I was sitting quite near the stage in the stalls) I found little about which to complain.

"Bedroom Farce," which runs in rotation from June 24 to July 28, takes a keen eye to the marriages of four couples who are all at different points in their relationships.
Written by Alan Ayckbourn, often called "the British Neil Simon," the show tells the comings and goings in three bedrooms as one self-absorbed couple attempts to save their marriage as they wreak havoc on everyone else.
In one night the bickering couple manages to interrupt a wedding anniversary, spoil a house-warming party, and add misery to Nick and Jan's evening, which was not going well to begin with.

The latest example of this is a false claim that former Enron CEO Ken Lay stayed in the Lincoln Bedroom of the White House during the Clinton administration.
Because the facts are so obviously wrong, however, the Lincoln Bedroom myth didn’t reach critical mass until the past week, when it was given a new lease on life by two conservatives.
In a Feb. 15 letter to the editor in the Portland Oregonian, the myth was repeated, and it seems only to be growing, as even greater numbers of writers fail to check their facts.

Possibly one of Ayckbourn’s funniest plays, it is about the other things that people do in bedrooms – using them for pilchard picnics, crowded cloakrooms, doomed do-it-yourself and restless resting.
It’s a play about four couples in three bed-rooms, all of which are presented simultaneously on stage.
The action of one hectic night shows how Trevor and his wife descend on the three couples in turn leaving chaos and disaster in their wake.

One could be excused for thinking that the title of Alan Ayckbourn’s play “Bedroom Farce” suggests couples falling in and out of the wrong beds with the most ludicrous excuses and deliberate lies being lampooned to try and cover up for its characters indiscretions.
This play will send most lovers of British farce sound asleep and this is what appeared to have happened to the audience on the evening I saw the play.
Having never been a fan of farce as a genre, I went to see this with fairly low expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised, at a great play and fantastic performances.

 Talkin' Broadway Off-Broadway - Bedroom Farce - 11/22/03
The best joke of Alan Ayckbourn's Bedroom Farce is the title, which conjures up images of spicy sex romps, slamming doors, and sublimely ridiculous misunderstandings, only to deliver on none of those things.
Instead, it focuses on the mundanities of everyday life behind bedroom doors and finds its comedy in more true-to-life characters and their attempts to live sanely in the real world.
While Bedroom Farce isn't populated with archetypal characters to begin with, it benefits from the suggestion that the eight people it chronicles - who might put on very normal faces when dealing with the outside world - are very different people in their most personal and private of sanctuaries.

 Castle Players - Bedroom Farce
ALAN Ayckbourn's play 'Bedroom Farce' may spring to mind (for some of us!) visions of Brian Rix and knobbly kneed men, minus their pyjama bottoms, chasing scantily dressed women around the stage, along with lots of door slamming and over-acting.
Thankfully, there is none of that in this hilarious modern-day farce which is set in three bedrooms and revolves around the relationships of four couples and how their lives are entangled in each other's.
It was perfectly cast with old and new members of Castle Players, and Frank Holden expertly directed the performance, keeping the pacey dialogue flowing with slick lighting changes as the audience were taken from bedroom to bedroom.
