Bedzin Jews in the 1930s, regardless of their social class, were part of a thriving, active community that did not sit still for even a moment.

Ala Gertner - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Born in Bedzin, Poland, she was one of three children in a prosperous Jewish family.
On October 28, 1940 she was ordered to report to the train station in nearby Sosnowiec, where she was taken to a Nazi labor camp in Geppersdorf (now Rzedziwojowice), a construction site where hundreds of Jewish men were forced laborers on the Reichsautobahn (now the E22 highway) and women worked in the kitchen and laundry.
They lived in the Bedzin ghetto of Kamionka until sometime after July 16, 1943 (the date of Ala’s last known letter) and were probably deported to Auschwitz with the remaining Jews of Sosnowiec and Bedzin in early August, 1943.

The example of Bedzin, where Jewish poverty was not any worse than of the Christians, for whom special housing was established and efforts were made to provide good working conditions for them, is a distinct illustration of the sort of ruin that economic anti-Semitism brought on Jewish life.

 Alfred Rossner
The other large employer in Bedzin was the local Judenrat (Jewish Council); and it was somewhat in competition with the Rossner Shop and offered work in its various offices.
The Bedzin Judnerat, which formed a branch within the umbrella organization of Judenrats in Zaglebie, became, in the course of time, a tool in the hands of the German authorities in carrying out their genocidal policy against the Jewish population.
According to Altmann’s testimony, during the first large deportation from Bedzin, in May 1942, Rossner drove in his one-horse buggy into the poorest quarters of the town shouting in Yiddish to the inhabitants not to be fooled by the summons of the Judenrat and urging them not to report for deportation.

As you read previously, our BAUM family branch is “originally” from Wyszogrod, and in about 5 years of research I was able to construct a BAUM family tree back to 1730, the longest I have so far, ten generations back from my children.
Three years ago (1997) I went on a visit to the archives of Katowice (where the Bedzin vital data are deposited) and looked at the original B/M/D books: Itzhak Meir’s birth is not registered there (and none of his brothers or sisters is either).
I may have omitted that by mistake, as the Cyrillic records are a real challenge for me. Like most, if not all, of the extractors in the SIG Journal, we are self-taught, so I never lose sight of the fact that I may have made errors. The children were all listed as from Checiny.
