Designed by a team led by Ralph Harmon, the original model 35 Bonanza was the first truly modern high-performance personal airplane: a very fast, all-metal, low-wing monoplane at a time when most light aircraft were still made of wood and fabric.
All were either built with a larger, strengthened tail, or are subject to a FAA Airworthiness Directive that requires reinforcement and ongoing inspections of the tail structure.
A Beechcraft 35 Bonanza was the aircraft Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper died in when the aircraft crashed in the middle of a snowstorm (see The Day the Music Died).

Beechcraft Bonanza - Free net encyclopedia
Introduced in 1947 by The Beech Aircraft Corporation, as of 2006 it is still being produced by the Beechcraft Division of Raytheon Aircraft.
At the end of World War II two all-metal aircraft emerged, the 35 Bonanza and the Cessna 195, that represented very different approaches to the premium-end of the postwar civil aviation market.
The Cessna was unable to compete with the more advanced Bonanza (although it was the progenitor of the highly successful Cessna 172 and its variants, which dominated the lower end of the light plane market for decades).

Buddy Holly - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Following the February 2 performance at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, Buddy Holly chartered a Beechcraft Bonanza to take him and his new Crickets band (Tommy Allsup and Waylon Jennings) to Fargo, North Dakota.
The four-passenger Beechcraft Bonanza took off into a blinding snow storm and crashed into Albert Juhl's corn field several miles after takeoff at 1:05 A.M. The crash killed Holly, Valens, Richardson, and the 21 year-old pilot, Roger Peterson, leaving Holly's pregnant bride, Maria Elena Holly, a widow (she miscarried soon after).
Although the crash received a good deal of local coverage, it was displaced in the national news by a crash that occurred the same day in New York City, when an American Airlines Lockheed Electra crashed during an instrument landing approach at LaGuardia Airport.
