The Beecher Tradition : Lyman Beecher
Lyman Beecher, a pious freshman was repelled by the behavior of his compatriots and by his sophmore year had found his ideal in Timothy Dwight, the new President of Yale.
Lyman Beecher was, by the age of fifty, one of the best known preachers in the country, but he felt that he was underpaid and had already preached enough sermons to Litchfield's congregates.
Lyman Beecher remained in Cincinnati until 1851 and during the intervening years was faced with the controversy over the issue of slavery at Lane Seminary, which caused some students to rebel and seek asylum in the newly formed Oberlin Collegiate Institute.

The Beechers also had a close family relationship with the Langdons, which is indicated by the fact that Thomas had a key to their house (across from the church) so he could go over and take naps instead of going home.
Though Beecher was a pro-slavery advocate, he believed in the unity of the country and spoke out against the secession of the Southern states that triggered the Civil War.
Although his sister was Harriet Beecher Stowe the author of Uncle Tom's Cabin, Beecher was not opposed to the institution of slavery and continued to preach on the subject in church.

 Harriet Beecher Stowe
The American writer and philanthropist Harriet Beecher Stowe, seventh child of Lyman and Roxana (Foote) Beecher, was born at Litchfield, Connecticut on the 14th of June 1811.
Her father (the Congregational minister of the town) and her mother were both descended from members of the company that, under John Davenport, founded New Haven in 1638; and the community in which she spent her childhood was one of the most intellectual in New England.
Catherine Beecher, who was eager to establish what should be in effect a pioneer college for women, accompanied him; and with her went Harriet as an assistant, taking an active part in the literary and school life, contributing stories and sketches to local journals and compiling a school geography.

 The Vampire (1957)
Campbell is nearly dead by the time Beecher arrives, and his last act is to hand the doctor a vial of pills while mumbling some cryptic utterance to the effect that those pills are “the key to everything.” Beecher’s best guess as to the cause of Campbell’s subsequent death is heart failure.
Beecher makes a point of returning to the Campbell place in order to meet with the two new researchers; for one thing, Beaumont was a friend of his back in high school, and for another, there’s something that’s been weighing on Beecher’s mind ever since the incident with Marion Wilkins.
Beecher begins to lose his grip on his life, partly as an effect of his new addiction, and partly because of the mental strain that accompanies his increasingly strong belief that he is the vampire-like killer who has recently begun stalking his town.
