Beemster (population: 8,541 in 2004) is a municipality in the north-western (A constitutional monarchy in western Europe on the North Sea; achieved independence from Spain in 1579; half the country lies below sea level) Netherlands, in the province of (Click link for more info and facts about North Holland) North Holland.
The Beemster area was created in the year 1612, making it the first so-called (Click link for more info and facts about polder) polder in the world that was extracted from a lake, of which the water was pumped out by (Generator that extracts usable energy from winds) windmills.
Because of its historical relevance, and because the original structure of the area is still mainly intact, Beemster is on the (An agency of the United Nations that promotes education and communication and the arts) Unesco (Click link for more info and facts about World Heritage) World Heritage list.
