Beep Media Player is a multimedia player that currently uses a skinned user interface based on Winamp 2.x skins.
For everyone that currently packages BMP for some distro or is planning to to package BMPx as well: Please don't do that yet.
If you're packing it alongside BMP (which currently is possible without problems), you are free to do so of course (we won't prohibit downloads of our tarballs :P), but please be aware that BMPx is in beta-stage and some code parts are still in alpha stage.

Beep Media Player - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Beep Media Player (BMP) is a free audio player, based on the XMMS multimedia player.
The BMP is mainly a port of XMMS to GTK+ 2 and, as such, integrates better with the look and feel of more recent versions of the GNOME, Xfce, and, if using the GTK-QT theme engine for KDE, KDE desktop environments.
BMP supports most of the audio file formats supported by XMMS, since the main difference between the plug-ins used in both players is the graphical widget toolkit used for 'About' and configuration dialog boxes.

Beep Media Player's source code was forked from XMMS, and indeed it looks and feels just like XMMS, but with an updated Gtk interface.
I found most of the available audio players for Linux to be quite usable, even though many were lacking in music management features and some had limited file format support.
XMMS is a solid and reliable player and has plenty of plugin support for different file formats, audio effects, visualizations, and even a music management interface similar to Rhythmbox called MadMan.

 FAQ - BMPx Wiki
And yes we dropped the Winamp2.x GUI which was a radical change and users had to re-learn UI to some extent, but the reasons for this were different and certainly overriding the concern about the future consistency of the GUI because the Winamp2.x GUI, to sum it up in short, just had no future.
It was nothing we could have based BMP 2 in the future upon, it just had to be dropped at some point, and that point was just now when we did it.
