Beep - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A beep is a noise, generally of a single tone, often generated by a machine.
Beeps are used regularly in television programs to censor spoken words.
Chuck Jones, the creator of the Road Runner, said this sound, the only way the Road Runner can harm the Coyote, was inspired by hearing a Doppler-like effect as a worker carrying backgrounds beep-beeped when he could not see where he was going.

RFC 3080 - The Blocks Extensible Exchange Protocol Core. M. Rose.
RFC 3080 The BEEP Core March 2001 Note that both of these examples imply that the BEEP peer in the initiating role waits until the BEEP peer in the listening role sends its greeting -- this is an artifact of the presentation; in fact, both BEEP peers send their replies independently.
When a BEEP peer sends the "ready" element, it must not send any further traffic on the underlying transport service until a corresponding reply ("proceed" or "error") is received; similarly, the receiving BEEP peer must wait until any pending replies have been generated and sent before it processes a "ready" element.
RFC 3080 The BEEP Core March 2001 NOTE WELL: until a positive reply to the request to close the channel is received, the BEEP peer must be prepared to process any "MSG" messages that it receives on that channel.

Beep Test for Aerobic Fitness Evaluation of Soccer Players
In the standard Beep Test (also known as the Leger Test), the runner covers a 20 meter interval at steadily increasing pace, with several iterations to be completed at each pace before moving on to the next.
After the warm-up and set-up are both completed, the coach should carefully explain the simple beep test to the players, and, using the audio tape, allow the players to run a few repetitions at the lowest speed so that they become accustomed to the two sounds on the tape.
At each beep from the audio tape, the player must run to the gate at the opposite end, and get a foot between the cones at that opposite end gate before the next beep sounds.

Mapping the BEEP Core onto TCP
Similarly, during establishment of the BEEP session, if the BEEP peer acting in the listening role is unable to allocate at least 4096 octets for channel 0, then it must return a negative reply, as specified in Section 2.4 of [1], instead of a greeting.
If a BEEP peer is asked to create a channel and it is unable to allocate at least 4096 octets for that channel, it must decline creation of the channel, as specified in Section 2.3.1.2 of [1].
To achieve this, BEEP re-introduces a mechanism used by the TCP: window-based flow control — each channel has a sliding window that indicates the number of payload octets that a peer may transmit before receiving further permission.

Cover Pages: Blocks eXtensible eXchange Protocol Framework (BEEP)
BEEP tackles those issues that are common to many application protocols once, and leaves the design of the remaining 10% to 20% of issues that are unique to each application protocol to the designers of that application protocol...Example uses of BEEP include distributed application-to-application communication, distributed user interfaces, web services and peer-to-peer services.
BEEP is connection-oriented -- which means that a connection is established and maintained -- and then messages flow over this, and sometime later the connection is closed.
BEEP is a new approach that recognizes that many application protocols are trying to solve the same set of issues again and again.

An Overview of BEEP by Marshall Rose
BEEP's goal is simple: you, the protocol designer, focus on the protocol details for your problem domain, and BEEP takes care of the other details.
BEEP's inner mechanisms (for example, framing) are pretty light-weight, so you don't incur a lot of overhead using them (even if you don't use all the functionality they provide).
BEEP integrates the best practices for common, basic mechanisms that are needed when designing an application protocol over TCP.

 Beep
Beep is a prank program that will cause a person's computer to emit a loud, high-pitched beep through the motherboard (which means that even if they turn their desk speakers off, it'll still beep).
The beep cycle (beeping one second out of every 1.5 seconds) continues until the computer is restarted, at which point the prank is disabled.
If you want to make it start up with Windows, either add it to the startup folder or to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.

The reason for this, as Peter Tirsek was nice enough to point out to me, stems from how the kernel handles beep's attempt to poke at (for non-programmers: ioctl is a sort of catch-all function that lets you poke at things that have no other predefined poking-at mechanism) the tty, which is how it beeps.
On the other hand, if you do make it suid root, all your problems with beep bailing on ioctl calls will magically vanish, which is pleasant, and the only reason not to is that any suid program is a potential security hole.
By default beep is not installed with the suid bit set, because that would just be zany.

 beep code - a Whatis.com definition
A beep code is the audio signal given out by a computer to announce the result of a short diagnostic testing sequence the computer performs when first powering up (called the Power-On-Self-Test or POST).
If an error message is beeped on startup, the user must first determine what kind of BIOS the computer is running (Phoenix or AMI are the most popular) and use that information to look up the particular beep code sequence that is being sent.
The beeping sequence is really a coded message (beep code) designed to tell the user what is wrong with the computer.
