Beethoven, Ludwig van (1770-1827)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Beethoven was born in the provincial court city of Bonn, Germany, probably on Dec. 16, 1770.
Beethoven's own talent was such that at the age of 12 he was already an assistant to the organist Christian Gottlob Neefe, with whom he studied.
Beethoven himself became a powerful symbol, the prototype of the modern artist-hero as opposed to the artist-craftsman of the preerevolutionary Europe.

Beethoven’s 5th finds your favorite St. Bernard on a hunt for hidden treasure when he accompanies best friend Sara (Daveigh Chase) on a summer visit to her uncle Freddy (Dave Thomas), who lives in the usually quiet town of Quicksilver.
Whether Beethoven is riding on a fire engine truck or rolling along on a mechanics creeper, trainers practiced every action with the animals before filming, and verbally cued the dog from off-camera for every scene.
Babycakes further aggravates Beethoven by spinning around and wiggling her backside at him from inside.

In Beethoven's 5th, the beloved St. Bernard named for the wild-haired composer hops on a bus with his 12-year-old owner, Sara (Daveigh Chase, who gave voice to Lilo in Disney's Lilo & Stitch).
Of course there's a dog-napping, but instead of disgusting "gotcha" doggie jokes (as in the disappointing 3rd) and people trying to adjust to the big ball of fur, the focus is on a treasure hunt.
In Beethoven's 5th, the drooling one stumbles onto a buried cache of Roaring Twenties loot and returns with a single $10 bill to pique the town's interest.

Ditching every last quality that made the previous movies – especially the second one – so much fun, this is a perfect example of the desire to rake in the bucks prevailing over the realisation that the series has run its course.
Basically, this is a bargain-basement comedy with the Beethoven name slapped on the titles and a big dog crowbarred into a plot that hardly bothers to make use of him.
Beethoven darting off somewhere every two minutes is about as much as the movie can think to do with him, because it doesn't have the memorable chemistry between the characters that the first two did.

It is Beethoven's contention that nephew Karl is in the clutches of a "demon" (his mother!), and that only by taking charge of Karl himself can the composer tap the boy's inherent musical genius.
As Karl's independence grows, Beethoven's health declines, possibly because of the psychological ramifications of watching his surrogate son grow away from him.
Adapted by Morrissey and Mathieu Carriere from a novel by Luigi Magnani, Beethoven's Nephew was released in the US nearly two years after its French premiere.

Ludwig Van Beethoven is my all time favorite composers; as he may be a favorite of many of yours.
But despite a number of sketches associated with such a project setting, there is no evidence that the composer contemplated incorporating one into a symphony until he was well advanced with his work on the purely instrumental movements of the ninth.

As with last year's "Beethoven," the cleverly titled "Beethoven's 2nd" is best served when Charles Grodin is on the screen, as the hapless head of a modern suburban household that has been invaded by a huge, incorrigible St. Bernard.
Grodin comically sputters and fumes, and generally displays indignation better than anyone in the movies today, and he is frequently hilarious.
"Beethoven's 2nd" is rated PG for comic violence and a few vulgar gags.

The film chronicles the years of Beethoven's greatest successes and his struggles against overwhelming adversity--poverty, the onset of deafness and his unrequited passion for his "Immortal Beloved." Writer-director Gance conducts a symphony of images set to an expressionistic score, depicting not only the events but the spirit of the composer's life.
Rejected by society and his "immortal beloved" Beethoven moves to an isolated mill where he battles his demons and composes masterpieces in a fury.
Gance's signature fast-cut editing is taken to new heights as he treats Beethoven's music with the same experimental vision, underscoring all of the action and accentuation the effects of the editing with choice moments from various compositions.
