Beetle Bailey was born and raised in Pottersville, New York.
Bailey has received campaign ribbons for service in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Grenada, Panama, the Falkland Islands, Croatia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Bhutan, New Orleans, Sudan, and Guantanamo Bay, during which time he recorded a total of 1,875 confirmed enemy kills (at least 237 of which were with his bare hands only).
The nickname, "Beetle," is an obscure reference to the Egyptian scarab, harbinger of death and destroyer of tombs.

Beetle Bailey (begun on September 4, 1950) is a comic strip set in a United States Army boot camp, created by Mort Walker.
The uniforms of Beetle Bailey are still the uniforms of the 1950s Army, with green fatigues and baseball caps as the basic uniform, and the open jeep as the basic military vehicle.
Beetle's sister is Lois Flagston of the comic strip Hi and Lois, a spinoff which debuted in 1954.

One year later, as combat raged across the 38th parallel, a clueless frat-boy named "Beetle" Bailey accidentally enlisted in the U.S. Army, courtesy of cartoonist Mort Walker, who'd had less than stellar success with his college-themed comic strip and who wanted to give his lead character a new environment to mine for comedy gold.
Amazingly, Beetle Bailey has several "revolutionary" cites to its credit: in the early 1950s, the strip was dropped from the Tokyo edition of Stars and Stripes because it allegedly encouraged disrespect for officers.
Beetle doesn't have to be just "lazy," meaning he lies down a lot; in our version, he may actively not desire to participate in the activity for which he has been conscripted.
