Sunrise - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sunrise should not be confused with dawn, which is the (variously defined) point at which the sky begins to lighten, some time before the sun itself appears, ending twilight.
As sunrise and sunset are calculated from the leading and trailing edges of the Sun, and not the center; this slightly increases the duration of "day" relative to "night." The sunrise equation, however, is based on the center of the sun.
Sunrise is a symbol in art and literature of new hope and new beginnings.

 Chicago Reader Movie Review
You don't have to have seen Before Sunrise to follow the sequel, especially since Linklater gives us a few quick, silent glimpses of Jesse (Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) as they were in the first film during their day together in Vienna in 1994.
During the final stretches of Before Sunrise we see a succession of places in Vienna where Celine and Jesse have spent time together in the order in which we first saw them, though neither character is present; it's a kind of melancholy scrapbook.
Both characters, now in their 30s, have many more protective layers to peel away before they can gauge their feelings for each other, and the nature of those feelings is harder for them (and us) to recognize and define.

It has rarely happened in a nicer, sweeter, more gentle way than in Richard Linklater's "Before Sunrise," which I could call a "Love Affair" for Generation X, except that Jesse and Celine stand outside their generation, and especially outside its boring insistence on being bored.
"Before Sunrise" is so much like real life - like a documentary with an invisible camera - that I found myself remembering real conversations I had experienced with more or less the same words.
Now there's "Before Sunrise," about two nice kids, literate, sensitive, tentative, intoxicated by the fact that their lives stretch out before them, filled with mystery and hope, and maybe love.

Before Sunrise ended with a mutual decision to meet once again at the same train station in 6 months, no exchange of phone numbers, addresses, or even last names, and no slow fade out to the intoxicating night they both held so dear.
Before Sunset, the sequel, picks up with these two characters nine years after their initial meeting on the train; Celine and Jesse are a little worn out and trod on by life but just as inquisitive.
Before Sunset is not your typical romantic drama, it is uplifting to those who are in love as well as those who have lost loves.

Not even a decade has passed since Before Sunrise was first released and yet seeing it now gives rise to conjecture as to how naive it might seem to young people today, college kids like the film's two central characters.
Older folks looking at Before Sunrise likely will not identify directly with its two young lovers, but might wax nostalgic for the guileless days of youth, for the memories of an emotional mindset from their past, doubtlessly romanticized as memories are wont to be by the passage of time.
Before Sunrise is surely both romance and romanticized.
