  Beggars Opera [www.progweed.net]
Beggars Opera were one of the best groups of the early British symphonic style, characterized by the likes of Spring, Fantasy and Cressida.
Whereas some of their peers had a tendency to be overly concerned with pop melodies at the expense of instrumental depth, Beggars Opera were able to successfully meld the two, thanks in large part of Alan Park's distinctive organ and keyboard, as well as Rick Gardiner's biting guitar.
The second album from the seminal Scottish group Beggars Opera is probably their best, as Waters of Change shows a significant maturation in the songwriting department, and for the most part eschews the classical rock, over-the-top organ bombast of Act One.

 Literary Encyclopedia: The Beggar's Opera
The opera received sixty-two performances that season and went on to be continuously performed on the English stage each year throughout the eighteenth century.
The Beggar’s Opera was a new kind of work for the English stage, a ballad opera, marking the beginning of a long tradition that stretches through Gilbert and Sullivan in the nineteenth century to Rice and Lloyd-Webber in the present.
The opera’s enduring appeal has more to do with the racy verve of its setting among the thieves, pickpockets, highwaymen, fences, turnkeys, streetwalkers and prostitutes of London’s criminal underworld than with the unfolding narrative.

All these, more or less, are gravely reflective or didactic in tone, as, indeed, is also The Cherrie and The Slae; but, in the two opening, and the final, recitativos of the boisterous Jolly Beggars, he made use of it for humorous descriptive purposes with a picturesque felicity not surpassed in verse.
The cantata thus samples all his principal Scots staves, though omitting the Sir Thopas stave of The Epistle to Lord Daer and Fintry My Stay, the modified Killychrankie form of the ballad stave, as exemplified in Guildford Good and the heroic couplet of the partly English and partly Scots Brigs of Ayr.
The poem is, also, modelled on the burlesque odes and cantatas of the period; but the wonder is that, such being the case, the curious metrical medley should be such a captivating masterpiece.

The Beggars Opera (Sekacz) - Guide to Musical Theatre
Written in 1728, The Beggar's Opera is a savagely funny satire on marriage, money and morals - as relevant and biting today as it was when first written.
In this new version by John Caird and Ilona Sekacz, the old story is given new fife as all our favourite characters return, in a play within a play, where beggars and thieves create a world of love, lust, violence, deceit, greed - and a little more love.
Ilona Sekacz's score uses all the old tunes, but brings them up to date in a superb synthesis of 18th and 20th century musical styles.

 The Beggar's Opera - brittenpears.org
The popularity of Britten’s three chamber operas proper (The Rape of Lucretia, Albert Herring and The Turn of the Screw) has tended to somewhat overshadow his brilliant adaptation of John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera, the realisation of which was completed in 1948.
Despite the longish stretches of spoken dialogue, Britten brings all his usual techniques of dramatic characterisation to bear and binds the work together by effective use of leitmotif and meaningful key-schemes.
The scoring too is brilliantly imaginative with Britten varying the range and constitution of the orchestra almost from number to number.
