Begoniaceae may be recognised by their succulent, herbaceous habit and often 2-ranked leaves the blades of which have asymmetrical bases and well developed teeth.
Begoniaceae are unusual among monoecious taxa with cymose inflorescences in that the carpellate flowers are produced only later and the first flowers produced in the inflorescence are staminate, although the derived Symbegonia group forms an exception.
