Akhtaribai Faizabadi, or Begum Akhtar as she was more popularly known, was born on 7th October, 1914 in the small town of Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh in northern India.
Subsequently Begum Akhtar moved back to Lucknow where she was approached by the famous producer-director Mehboob Khan, as a result of which she acted in ROTI which was released in 1942 and whose music was composed by maestro Anil Biswas.
In 1945, Begum AKhtar was married to barrister Ishtiaq Ahmed Abbasi and became known as Begum Akhtar.

BEGUM AKHTAR (1914 - 1974), who shot to fame in her late teens as Akhtari Bai Faizabadi, was the last of the tawaifs or singing courtesans who had captured the imagination of the public since Mirza Haadi Ruswa published Umrao Jaan Adaa, said to be the first Urdu novel, in the late 1890s.
Umrao Jaan, the eponymous heroine, was a rebel in a calcified society and Begum Akhtar, a reluctant victim in an essentially feudal one, which retained its character despite the two World Wars and the Partition of India in 1947.
Reading it, one would believe that she was the only pupil of Begum Akhtar's who stuck with her through thick and thin and that the others came and went.

But she was never allowed to sing khyal : all her life, she was a victim of prejudice against Muslim female singers: she was not allowed to sing classical music, and her repertoire remained artificially limited to the so-called «semi-classical» music, the thumris, horis, dadras and ghazals.
Begum Akhar died on the 22nd October 1974, after having taught for a while in the Bhatkande Music College in Lucknow.
