  Rokeya Sakhawat Hussain - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rokeya Sakhawat Hussain, often known as Begum Rokeya (বেগম রোকেয়া), was a writer, feminist and social worker in Bengal in early 20th century.
Rokeya was born in 1880 at the village Pairaband, in Rangpur, now in Bangladesh.
Rokeya Hussain was working on an essay entitled Narir Adhikar (The Rights of Women) when she died in December, 1932.

In 1896, Ibrahim was instrumental in the family marrying off Rokeya at age 16 to a widower in his late 30's, Syed Sakhawat Hossain, who was then a district magistrate in the Bihar region of Bengal Presidency.
Rokeya herself says that if she had not had her brother and husband's support, she would not have been able to write and contribute to the advancement of Muslim women in her country.
Rokeya did not reject veiling altogether as she herself wore a veil.

Rokeya Hosain was born to a wealthy and socially conservative zamindar (large landlord) in a northern district of what is now Bangladesh.
At a very early age, Rokeya Hosain made up her mind to fight against the unthinking observance of customs, especially those that struck her to be absurd or unjust.
Rokeya Hosain carried out her husband's wish by establishing a girl's school in Bhagalpur and then moved it to Calcutta, where it continues to flourish.
