Topic: Behavioural Science Unit

Federal Bureau of Investigation - The FBI Academy - Behavioral Science Unit
The Behavioral Science Unit is one of the instructional components of the FBI's Training and Development Division at Quantico, Virginia.
The unit's personnel are primarily Supervisory Special Agents and experienced instructors and veteran police officers with advanced degrees in the behavioral science disciplines of psychology, criminology, and sociology.
In its research, the Behavioral Science Unit focuses on developing new and innovative investigative approaches and techniques to the solution of crime by studying the offender, and his/her behavior and motivation.

Three necessary components for forensic science training and education were given: o Education should occur in an institution that also conducts research, programs should be longer, and activities should reflect the skills students need in the field.
The academic crisis in forensic sciences, said Dr. Weedn, results from a lack of infrastructure; aging faculty; and a professional community that is too small, often not laboratory based, and inadequately supported.
In distinguishing science from technical or specialized knowledge, most judges said the "fit to the case" was more important than defining whether the evidence was "science" or "technical method." Approximately 84 percent thought survey research was not scientific.

Clarice Starling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As a chore, she is asked to interview Hannibal Lecter, a cannibalistic serial killer and psychiatrist who is held in an insane asylum.
She graduated from the University of Virginia at the top of her class and became a star student of the training school, attracting the attention of FBI Chief of Behavioural Science Jack Crawford, who selected her to interview Lecter.
Upon arriving at the asylum for her first interview with Lecter, Starling is the subject of the crude and lewd attentions of Lecter's captor, the asylum manager Frederick Chilton.

REPORT ON BREADTH OF STUDY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA - BREADTH IN REGULATORY PRACTICE
For example, a unit in Microeconomics may genuinely be social science or it may be structured in such a way that it is essentially a unit in mathematical model building and mathematical derivation and analysis.
A unit in Psychology may be presented with such a biological and anatomical slant that it is essentially a science unit rather than social (or behavioural) science.
Thus many units in Science, Medicine and Engineering are all essentially in the "Science" learning area, making it pointless to enable their students to meet a grouping requirement by taking units in another faculty of the three.

Next, the gathered data is used to reconstruct the crime and to create a series of hypotheses as to the behaviour o the victim and the offender, method of victim selection, sequence of the crime or Modus operandi (MO), motives, and typology of crime, for example, organised or disorganised.
The unit known as NCAVC (National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime) handles over 1,500 cases a year, from all round the world, and was primary in convincing the British police to use a profile to catch the Yorkshire Ripper.
The BSU has also learnt that this type of killer is very intelligent and will offer alter his MO to avoid detection, this can be seen in this country in the case of the Yorkshire ripper, who in his early killings used a screwdriver, but later changed to using a ligature.

Gazette: The psychopathic offender   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-15)
This article by Sgt Matt Logan of the RCMP’s Behavioral Science Unit and his colleagues, looks at the nature of this mental disorder and why it is imperative that police officers focus on this small but dangerous group.
Moreover, their egocentricity, grandiosity, sense of entitlement, impulsiveness, general lack of behavioural inhibitions and need for power and control constitute what might be described as the perfect prescription for asocial, anti-social and criminal acts.
Understanding the mind of the psychopath and the personality and behavioural traits associated with this disorder allows us to predict strategies that are more likely to work as we investigate and communicate with the psychopath.

Serial Killer ; Hannibal Lecter & Ted Bundy
Although some of the profiles produced by the Behavioural Science Unit of the FBI have proven 'uncannily accurate', as the newspapers are fond of putting it, others have been so wrong as to be laughable.
Thus, prior to the capture of Wayne Williams by the Atlanta police who put their hands upon him by using the classic police technique of the 'stake-out', the FBI had produced a profile in which they stated that the killer was most probably a white racist.
In a sequence which is at the same time a metaphor for and a critique of the profile-building methods of the BSU specialists, two young scholars trace the chrysalis to the Black Witch Moth.

A criminal profile should examine “behavioural evidence at a crime scene, in the witness statements, or in autopsy protocols anything we can get that might lead us to helping the police in their hunting down the unknown subject” (Douglas and Olshaker 1999:81).
The profile is arrived at by conducting a process that involves a thorough examination of physical and behavioural evidence patterns in a given case or series (eg wound pattern analysis, bloodstain pattern analysis etc), victimology and crime scene characteristics.

Big Idea - 15/09/2002: The Serial Killer
The homicide rates in the United States have, more or less, fluctuated throughout the years, but I think the peak of homicides in the United States was somewhere around the mid-eighties, when, in fact, we were running at almost 25,000 homicides a year.
Robert Ressler worked at the FBI's Behavioural Science Unit at Quantico, and was one of the first people to interview serial killers.
And there was a strong reason for that, which was that the mythology also came complete with a solution, which was the solution they were offering in terms of their profiling skills and emphasis on technology as a means of linking together serial murders.
