  Behavioural Ecology Research Group
Behavioural ecology is the study of the relationships between an organism's behaviour and the environment in which that behaviour has evolved or is expressed.
Behavioural ecologists study both the function of behaviour (why animals and plants behave as they do), and the role of behaviour in determining population dynamics and community patterns, since these are two sides of the same coin.
The Behavioural Ecology Research Group was established at SFU in February 1989 to pursue basic research in the field of evolutionary and behavioural ecology, utilizing a wide range of study organisms, including plants, insects and other invertebrates, fish, birds, and mammals (including humans).

BS34320 - BEHAVIOURAL ECOLOGY   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Emphasis is placed on the critical analysis of the adaptive significance of behaviour, and on the importance of behavioural ecology for the conservation, management and welfare of animals.
The functional analysis of parental behaviour illustrates the problem of co-operation and conflict between parents, and between parents and offspring, and the examination of host-parasite and mutualistic relationships extends these analyses to inter-specific interactions.
The implications of behavioural ecological studies for the husbandry and welfare of domestic and captive animals are introduced, and the necessity to apply knowledge gained from behavioural ecology studies to conservation and biological control programmes discussed.

Considerable progress has been made over the past decade in understanding how behaviour, ecology, and genetics interact to determine individual survival and reproductive success in fishes, and thus the evolution of their behaviour.
Behavioural ecology of teleost fishes reviews the recent advances in knowledge of behavioural strategies and tactics of habitat selection and space use, foraging, predator avoidance and evasion, and reproduction.
Those concerned with behavioural ecology need to be aware of the implications and applications of basic theory.

Recent inclusion of behaviour of organisms into life history theory have changed some of the classic paradigms in life history ecology and lead to a rapid development in the field.
Flexible growth mediated by behavioural adjustments of organisms provide a prominent example on how behavioural ecology and life history theory have jointly been used in great success to more realistically predict trajectories for species development and ultimately species fitness patterns.
Some of the topics addressed will be: flexible growth rate and size and time at maturation in seasonal environments, effects of behavioural adjustments on life history and fitness in changing environments, phenotypic variations in life history traits and foraging traits as a function of condition (state).
